You worked so hard to clean yourself up, and you probably never want to do it again. A relapse is the last thing you want to deal with. Here are some tips for avoiding a relapse.

Clean up your life: Once you overcome your addiction, it is important to clean up the rest of your life. Take inventory of your friends, the places you go, the activities you do, and what you surround yourself with, and decide what needs to go and what should stay. It is important to remove people or things that negatively influence you from your life.

Surround yourself with positive people: After you overcome your addiction, replace the bad influences in your life with good ones. You need positive people around you to keep you on the right path. It’s easier to stay clean when everyone around you is clean too.

Stay accountable: Even after you have completed a rehab program, it is important to be held accountable. Try to get involved in a group support program or attend one-on-one counseling sessions. Either option shows that you are taking steps to make sure someone is there to listen to your concerns and encourage you to stay clean.

Do something fun and healthy: Find something you like to do that is good for you. For example, start working out, take a class at a local community center, start a book club, or volunteer for an organization you like. Spending your time doing something healthy and positive helps you stay free of a relapse.

It places stress on your health, your job, your friends, and your family. Here are the ways drug addiction affects your personal life.

Jeopardizes job or school: When you are addicted to drugs it is difficult to focus on your job or schoolwork. You may begin missing important assignments or not giving your best at work. You may even stop going, which can put your job at risk or cause your grades to drop. This is a major problem because without a job, you have no way to support yourself, and without an education it will be harder to get the job you want one day.

Alienates friends and family: When you’re addicted to drugs, you begin to act differently than before. Your friends and family love you and don’t want to see you struggle, which might make it difficult for them to stand by you. Your behavior may also begin to scare them depending on your behaviors while you are on drugs.

Causes health issues: Excessive drug use causes health issues that place stress on your personal life. Drug abuse might increase your medical bills or cause permanent health damage.

Financial issues: Drugs cost money, and once you’re addicted, you may find you are losing more money than you are making. This is an issue because you will not have enough money to continue your addiction, which may cause you to support your addiction through criminal activities.

What is process addiction and is there a way to overcome it? If you’ve ever wanted to know the answers to those questions, read on.

What it is: Process addiction is an addiction to an activity. People can be addicted to spending money, gambling, dieting, eating, etc. Many people view process addiction as just compulsive behavior, but people have extreme difficulty leaving the activity behind. Process addiction is more than just enjoying an activity; it is a true addiction that can be just as strong as a drug or alcohol addiction.

Why it happens: Just like with drug and alcohol addictions, there is no exact cause but instead many factors that come into play. Genetics, environment, psychological factors, and social status may contribute to the development of process addiction.

How you can overcome it: Just like drug and alcohol addictions, process addiction requires treatment. Talking to a counselor or visiting a rehab program is usually the most effective form of treatment. If you suspect you have a process addiction, it is important to seek help and find support to overcome your addiction.

At Solace Counseling, we know the importance of seeking treatment for your process addiction. Professionals at our outpatient rehab program provide effective addiction help in Dallas geared toward helping you become sober and reach your full potential. You work hard and devote so much time to getting better, but what do you do once you have gotten clean? Here are some tips for reestablishing your life after a drug addiction.

Make a new routine: One of the hardest things to do once you overcome a drug addiction is to get into a routine, but establishing a healthy routine is a great way to get your life back and stay clean. Start by working out, making dates to hang out with friends, or taking a class at your local community center. There are plenty of things you can do to help make your routine fun and exciting and keep you away from the habits you had before you were clean.

Hang out with good friends: After overcoming addiction, you may feel awkward about hanging out with people or you may have lost contact with some good friends. Choose friends who will be a good influence in your life, and plan to do something fun with them! Go for a hike or to a movie so you can bond and get to know each other again. Your friends will be there for you no matter what, so start hanging out with them.

Get rid of negativity: You will most likely be in a fragile state as you start your new life, so it is important to get rid of anything that may be a bad influence. This could mean old friends, things around your home, or places you used to go. You can replace these things with positive influences and new things that remind you of the progress you have made.

Stay accountable: It’s important to continue seeking support after you overcome your addiction. Whether you do that through a group program or one-on-one counseling sessions is up to you, but it’s best to find someone who can keep you on the right path and encourage you when things get difficult.

Solace Counseling understands the importance of reestablishing your life after overcoming an addiction. People ingest heroin in many different ways, so it can be difficult to be certain if someone is suffering from an addiction. Here are some ways to notice heroin addiction.

Physical symptoms: Many people associate heroin addiction with track marks on peoples’ arms or legs from injections. While this is a common physical symptom, there are other things to watch out for. Weight loss, small pupils, scabs or open sores on skin from picking or scratching, bruises, a constantly runny nose, and skin infections can also be signs of an addiction. People with heroin addictions may also wear long sleeves and pants even when it’s warm outside to hide injection marks or scabbed skin, and women may stop menstruating.

Emotional symptoms: When a person becomes addicted to heroin, their self-esteem usually weakens and they make self-deprecating comments. Heroin addicts also withdraw from activities they used to enjoy and may become hostile toward loved ones.

Behavioral symptoms: Heroin addicts may begin missing school or work, sleep more often than usual, lie or be deceitful, and stop maintaining their hygiene or physical appearance. h If you notice burnt silver spoons, syringes, burnt aluminum foil, a white powdery substance in a plastic bag, or burnt straws, you may have found heroin paraphernalia. These are common items used to ingest the drug.

If you feel you or a loved one may be struggling with an addiction to heroin, Solace Counseling can help. At Solace Counseling, we know the importance of counseling and undergoing an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program to help overcome heroin addiction. Many people see it as a quick-fix cure for addiction, but that is not necessarily the case. Does drug rehab cure addiction? Read on to find out.

Does drug rehab cure addiction? The easy answer is no, because addiction does not really have a cure. Drug rehab is meant to help you overcome drug addiction and equip you with effective ways to stay sober throughout your life. Overcoming drug addiction is a difficult process, but it is well worth it in the end. While drug rehab may not be the cure for addiction, it is your best bet of overcoming addiction and learning how to stay off drugs.

Why it doesn’t cure addiction: Drug rehab helps you become strong enough to resist drugs and gives you insight into how to stay away from them, but only you can “cure” your drug addiction. By surrounding yourself with clean and sober people, regularly going to counseling, and setting up a support group, you can beat addiction.

How it works: Whether you choose an inpatient or outpatient drug rehab program, you will probably experience similar exercises. However, every program is customized exactly to your needs, so it is important to talk to a drug rehab center near you to work out the specifics of your program.

At Solace Counseling, we know the importance of counseling and undergoing an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment program to help overcome drug addiction. What is behavioral therapy and how does it work? Here are some answers for you.

What it is: Behavioral therapy is a way to improve mental health. Often referred to as counseling, behavioral therapy usually involves a patient meeting with a counselor to discuss behaviors they don’t like and identify the best ways to change them.

How it works: In behavioral therapy, a counselor helps a patient identify behaviors that are working well and behaviors that aren’t. Behavioral therapy helps patients become more aware of their actions and ways of thinking so they can handle certain situations more effectively.

Who it benefits: Behavioral therapy benefits people struggling with depression or anxiety, as well as people looking to better deal with stress or get through a difficult time in their life. Behavioral therapy tries to address mental health issues without medication, but it is often coupled with medication to better help the patient. In rehab programs, patients may also go through some behavioral therapy to help them learn how to prevent a relapse once they are sober and leave rehab.

At Solace Counseling, we know the importance of behavioral therapy. We are proud to provide counseling to those struggling with anxiety disorders, symptoms of depression, or other mental or behavioral issues. We would be happy to talk with you and help you decide whether Solace Counseling offers the right treatment plan for you or your family member. You want to help your loved one and make sure they are okay without upsetting or angering them. Here are signs that someone may need drug rehab.

Developing signs of addition: If you notice your loved one withdrawing from activities they used to enjoy, becoming increasingly irritable, and exhibiting changes in their personality, they may be addicted to drugs and in need of drug rehab.

Consistently under the influence: If you begin to notice your loved one is often under the influence of drugs, it may be time for them to enter into a drug rehab program. Drug abuse harms the body in a variety of ways, some irreparable, and can cause problems for one’s emotional welfare. If your loved one is using drugs constantly, they are increasing their risk of damaging their bodies and their minds. Drug rehab coaxes them off of drugs and works to repair any damage that has already been done.

Missing responsibilities: When drug use begins to interfere with your loved one’s daily life, it may be time for drug rehab. If your loved one is missing school or work or skipping out on other responsibilities, drugs have started to take over their lives and they need to get help.

Acting dangerously: Some people act dangerously when they are addicted to drugs. They might resort to petty crime or act violently as a result of the drugs. You want your loved ones to be safe, not a danger to themselves or others, so if they begin to act dangerously, they should consider drug rehab.

At Solace Counseling, we know the most effective way to treat drug addiction is through counseling and an outpatient drug rehab program. Our professionals provide effective drug addiction help in Dallas geared toward helping patients become sober and reach their full potential.
Understanding the disease: Addiction is now understood to be a brain disease because scientific research has shown that alcohol and other drugs can change brain structure and function. Advances in brain imaging science make it possible to see inside the brain of an addicted person and pinpoint the parts of the brain affected by drug abuse, providing knowledge that will lead to the development of new approaches to prevention and treatment.

Effects on the brain: A person’s brain changes with repeated misuse of alcohol or drugs. Sometimes, the brain’s dopamine transmitters, special nerves that send feelings of pleasure to the brain, stop working as well. This may leave the person feeling depressed when they stop using the substance. The brain’s gray matter volume, which consists of valuable nerve tissue, may also be reduced. Additionally, damage can occur to the hippocampal region of the brain, affecting critical functions, like short-term memory. Some of these problems can persist for years after the patient has stopped misusing alcohol or drugs. A damaged brain recovers at a much slower rate than other parts of the body.

Treatment: The more that is discovered about the science of addiction, the better treatment options will be. Drug and alcohol dependence are lifelong disorders, but they can be managed by effective treatment. Counseling, both individually and in a group setting, is often the first step toward changing the destructive behavior patterns of an addict.

If you or a loved one is struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, get addiction help in Dallas now at Solace Counseling, a Dallas rehab center. Overcoming addiction is difficult, and an addict needs the support of those closest to them. Getting a family member or friend the treatment they need is an important step, but family assistance and support should not stop with the end of rehab.

Educate yourself: Family and friends should be involved in the rehab process, and the family of the recovering addict needs to learn how best to support the addict at home just as the addict needs to learn how to stay sober. Most recovery and rehab programs include a family component, and caring family members should make every effort to attend and get the most out of this available resource.

Don’t tempt them: Family and friends need to make it as easy as possible for the addict to transition back into the home environment and newly sober living. The family should provide a sober and alcohol- and drug-free environment for the addict, and the house should ideally be emptied of all possible intoxicating substances. A recovering addict can always get drugs or alcohol if they truly want to, but sometimes if it is too readily available, the temptation to use can be overwhelming.

Reduce stress in their life: Many recovering addicts relapse in response to stress and due to poor problem solving and coping skills. The recovering addict needs to take responsibility for their life, as this is part of the healing process, but family members should be available to assist in any area that threatens to overwhelm the recovering addict during their first months of recovery. This can mean helping with the kids, helping with the bills, or just being there for companionship.

If you or a loved one is struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, get addiction treatment now at Solace Counseling, a Dallas rehab center. Keep reading for a better understanding of psychosis.

Definition: Psychosis is a symptom or feature of mental illness typically characterized by radical changes in personality, impaired functioning, and a distorted or nonexistent sense of objective reality. Patients suffering from psychosis have impaired reality testing; that is, they cannot distinguish personal, subjective experience from the reality of the external world. They experience hallucinations and/or delusions they believe are real, and may behave and communicate in an inappropriate and incoherent fashion.

What causes psychosis? Researchers don’t believe there is one single cause of psychosis. Instead, they think there are different factors that contribute to the development of the symptoms. Some of the factors are genetic and some are environmental, such as drug use, stressful life events, or complications at birth.

Psychosis, drugs, and alcohol: People with psychosis often take drugs or drink alcohol to cope with some of the symptoms of the illness, or counter some of the side effects of their medication. However, even a small amount of drugs and alcohol can make the symptoms of psychosis worse, and make treatment less effective. Drugs or alcohol may stop antipsychotic medication from working properly.

Psychosis and schizophrenia: People with schizophrenia suffer from severe psychosis, and usually have hallucinations and delusions. Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness whose cause is still unknown. Some doctors believe it’s a condition where the brain cannot correctly process normal inputs, while others believe a person’s environment may trigger it, such as an infection while in utero. Still others believe that genetic factors play a role.

Noticing and acknowledging the warning signs of domestic violence is the first step to ending it. If you recognize yourself or someone you know in the following warning signs and descriptions of abuse, don’t hesitate to reach out. There is help available.

Bruises or other injuries: An occasional bruise is to be expected, but bruises or injuries that look like they came from choking, punching, or being thrown down are not to be ignored. Black eyes, red or purple marks around the neck, and sprained wrists are common injuries in violent relationships. Frequent bruises on the arms suggest attempts at defending against the attacker. Attempts to hide bruises with clothing or make-up, and stories of falls that don’t truly explain the nature of the bruises or other injuries are also common signs of abuse.

Isolation: Victims of abuse often have few close friends and isolate themselves from relatives and co-workers. If they frequently miss work (or school) and social occasions; have to ask permission to meet, talk with, or do things with other people; or have lack of access to money and/or a car, these all should raise a red flag.

Low self-esteem: Constantly apologizing for trivial matters and being easily intimidated can be signs of an abuse victim. If you notice someone taking all of the blame for things that go wrong, even when it clearly isn’t their fault, take note. A co-worker may share a story about something that happened at home, and then take all of the blame for whatever occurred. Perpetual self-blame is a common occurrence among abuse victims.

If you are in need of counseling in Dallas prior to or after leaving an abusive relationship, Solace Counseling in Dallas, Texas can provide help. The inability to handle stress can have serious adverse effects on your health. Stress symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not realize it. You may think illness is to blame for that nagging headache, your frequent insomnia, or your decreased productivity at work, but stress could be the culprit. Here are four ways stress can impair your health.

Headaches: Headaches are more likely to occur when you're stressed. In fact, stress is the most common headache trigger. It’s not necessarily major life events, such as a new baby or a death in the family, that trigger stress-related headaches. Instead, it's often the everyday irritants, like searching for lost keys, sitting in traffic, and tolerating petty annoyances at work, that may erode your ability to cope. For some people, these seemingly trivial issues trigger headaches.

Loss of sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial to proper brain function, just like air, water, and food. Stress can modify sleep-wakefulness cycles, and any amount of sleep deprivation will diminish mental performance. It can quickly become a vicious cycle, as stress keeps you from getting adequate sleep, and the loss of sleep compounds your stress.

High blood pressure: High blood pressure, or hypertension, and stress are inextricably linked. Your body produces a surge of hormones when you're in a stressful situation. These hormones temporarily increase your blood pressure by causing your heart to beat faster and your blood vessels to narrow. There is no proof that stress alone causes long-term high blood pressure. It may be that other behaviors linked to stress, such as overeating, consuming alcohol, and poor sleeping habits, cause high blood pressure. However, perpetual short-term stress-related spikes in your blood pressure may put you at risk of developing long-term high blood pressure.

Solace Counseling can provide stress help in Dallas. Here are four suggestions for healthy ways to discipline your kids, keeping in mind that discipline is an ongoing process of shaping behavior, rather than isolated instances of punishment. Your goal is to modify their behavior.

Reward good behavior: Don’t only pay attention to your child when they’ve done something wrong. Rewarding good deeds targets behaviors you want to develop in your child. Note the important difference between a reward and a bribe. A reward is something your child receives after he or she has done something, while a bribe is given beforehand, to try and motivate your child to do what you want. Bribes should be avoided.

Be a role model: Avoid exhibiting behaviors you don’t want to see your kids display. Avoid yelling and screaming, because this can teach your child that it is all right to lose control if you don't get your way. If you feel like things are escalating too much, then take a break until you can regain your composure. Your actions speak much louder than your words.

Be consistent: Consistency is key. You cannot expect kids to learn and obey rules that are constantly in flux or change with your mood. Just as your own behavior should consistently be a model for them to follow, you need to set rules and boundaries, and stick to them. Kids benefit from limits. Rules and structure give children the security of knowing their parents are watching out for them.

Never discipline out of anger: Kids need to understand that they are being punished because of their behavior, and not because you are angry with them. If you need to step away and calm down, do it. When you can, calmly explain why you are punishing them. Any punishment will be rendered ineffective if it is deemed to be the result of your anger with them, rather than a direct result of their inappropriate behavior.

If you or someone you know is in need of counseling in Dallas, turn to Solace Counseling. A healthy home environment is crucial to children’s emotional growth and development, and seeking outside help may be necessary. If your child exhibits symptoms of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and discipline is a major source of conflict, consider counseling.
