They’ve seen the negative symptoms, but are also experiencing the symptoms of ADHD or bipolar disorder firsthand from their children. With limited solutions, parents are doing everything they can to quell the symptoms, but nothing seems to be working. Behavioral drugs seem like a last resort, but when is it time to consider such a thing?

Behavioral drugs are not inherently bad. They have provided balance and comfort to millions. But they can be dangerous or complicating when prescribed improperly or abused. Generally behavioral drugs prescribed properly and monitored with counseling have a very positive effect on someone suffering from a behavioral disorder.

If you are concerned for a family member that he or she may be suffering from a behavioral disorder, contact a counselor and seek assistance and guidance.

While some have been considered in relation with genetics, most are considered to be relative to the environment and development of the child. The diet, environment, and conditions the child is subject to during these important years of development can have a significant impact on their future behavioral habits.

While most behavioral disorders are treatable through use of either counseling, daily compensators, or medications, it is always preferred to have them prevented rather than treated. Limiting television during the developmental years is important to reducing the chances of ADHD later in life. Academic performance can be affected by the amount of attention-altering activities we surround our children with. Exploration and communication are key components of proper growth and should be a regular experience for any child.

While not all cases of behavioral disorders can be avoided, most can be treated when properly diagnosed. Seek the help of a counselor or therapist if you are concerned about your child’s academic performance or behavioral habits.

If it is something that has just recently come up, there is the possibility that it is not a disorder, but merely your body’s response due to an imbalance in your system brought about by poor habits. Poor eating or sleeping habits can cause your body to be malnourished and impair your mind’s cognitive abilities.

On the other hand, it is possible that you or your child may be experiencing ADHD or another behavioral disorder. A counselor or therapist can help you identify symptoms and solutions. By identifying the problem, one of many solutions can be used to reach focus and comfort. Behavioral drugs, when prescribed properly and monitored securely, have a long history of being effective in treating behavioral disorders like ADHD.

In either case, counseling and/or therapy are the best options available for coming to a knowledgeable conclusion and getting set in the right direction towards a solution. Coping mechanisms and counseling can be their own solution to such disorders, and the best way to find the most effective option for you is to seek counseling.

It is quite a common affliction among students suffering from academic performance and focus. While behavioral drugs and counseling can be effective tools for ADHD, there are several other compensators and tools that can help with ADHD. Below are three such coping tools.

1. Routine – Instating routine into a student’s life can help significantly with coping with ADHD. Routine establishes structure and direction and allows the student to better focus and manage tasks.

2. Consequences – Establishing consequences can help the student understand and adapt to behaviors that are unfavorable. Consequences can teach that certain behaviors bring about an undesirable result while also showing alternative methods of expression.

3. Planning – Outside of routine it is important to plan. Routines are broken on a regular basis when spontaneity ensues on a regular basis. It is important to plan for the unseen or upcoming events as much as possible. Keeping plans, schedules, calendars, and reminders in place as often as possible can help establish organization and focus.

If you don’t have any motivation, how will you continue to drive towards success? Establishing a cornerstone for your recovery from addiction is important to succeeding in conquering the addiction. A cornerstone of motivation can reignite your fervor to succeed.

Powerful motivation elements can come from many different things. Generally the most effective motivators are friends and family. Keep a picture on you of who you are fighting this addiction for. Know that you can give yourself and them a better life if you keep going. A relationship can be a strong cornerstone from which to base your fight against addiction.

When monitored and controlled, prescription drugs are generally more effective tools than over-the-counter medications. However, once the concept of control is lost, the safety and efficiency of the drugs are gone.

When taking prescription drugs, it is important to keep control in mind. You need to only take what is needed and advised by a doctor. When it comes to opiates, painkillers with addictive and euphoric qualities, it is important to limit their use unless absolutely necessary. You have to maintain your own sense of control over the drugs to avoid addiction and abuse. If you don’t maintain control, you can lose yourself to the drug.

You have to know you can do it. But convincing yourself you can do it can be a different concept entirely from confidence. There are plenty of addicts out there that believe they can conquer addiction simply by convincing themselves they can stop whenever they want. This thought process has led to many addicts continuing to struggle with drugs.

In order to truly beat a drug, you have to convince yourself that you need help, not convince yourself that you can do it alone. Confidence is key to beating an addiction, but doing it by yourself is no way to go about it. Counseling can give you the confidence, direction, and support you need to succeed. Convince yourself you can do it with help, not that you can do it alone.

In these cases, the addiction may be resolved, but only temporarily, as the circumstances still remain. This is much like a focus on defeating Mr. Hyde when Dr. Jekyll is the one who created Mr. Hyde. You can’t beat Hyde without beating Jekyll.

Jekyll is the you that got into the drugs that cause Hyde. You can only keep Hyde at bay for so long if Jekyll is still around. Defeating an addiction is a change of lifestyle and habits. It’s a change of yourself for the better so that Jekyll is no longer around to let Hyde out. When you can improve yourself, Jekyll can’t come back, and Hyde is then gone forever.

Tough love can be an effective tool in an intervention to challenge a friend or family member to fight their addiction, but it also can be a deterrent. Depending on the personality and circumstances of the addict, tough love can have a positive or negative effect on the situation, so it is definitely a strategy that should be communicated carefully.

Tough love is a method of communication that is stern and demanding in order to deliver a message of what is best for an individual. Some people are discouraged and hurt by such a direct form of communication and it can backfire, but it also can be exactly what is needed to break down the barriers. It is best to not confront a friend who you think may be struggling if you or they are unprepared. Counseling is always the best option with support from friends and family.

We have sworn never to touch chocolate ice cream again, but we always find ourselves tempted at the grocery store to partake of the delicious dessert. Sometimes we give in, and we know we shouldn’t, but it’s hard to beat a temptation every time.

That’s why it is so important to avoid temptation whenever possible. If you are struggling with an addiction, you can’t expect the temptation to go away continuing your same lifestyle. You may have to avoid certain streets, remove certain numbers from your phone, and even break off contact with certain people that may be leading you down the wrong path. Beating addiction is a lifestyle change that helps you to evade temptation successfully. It can be a difficult change, but also one that can better your life.

Basically, when a drug is abused, the body becomes imbalanced. The body is imbalanced in such a way that it builds a dependency for the drug. This dependency causes a sense of depression or physical pain when withdrawal occurs, further solidifying the addiction.

Since the drug causes an imbalance in the body that can only be quelled by the drug itself, the only way to beat an addiction is to unbalance the body once again by removing the drug. Unbalancing the body does cause the symptoms of withdrawal, which can range from mild to severe, but the only way to beat a drug is to beat this imbalance of the body until it can live without the drug again.

While it is obviously not the only symptom, it is one of the more dangerous symptoms due to its drive for further addiction. Depression is the leading cause of addiction because of the downward spiral it creates.

Many drugs that are abused cause a sense of euphoria that, once it leaves the body, can lead to depression. This depression then leads to more drug abuse, which in turn causes more depression, that leads to more drugs. This pattern quickly gets out of control and leads to a very destructive lifestyle. Depression is a mental disorder that by itself is difficult to treat alone, but combined with a drug addiction, it can be quite dangerous. Through personal counseling and therapy, however, depression and drug addiction can be successfully defeated.

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. A lot of different circumstances and situations come into play when it comes to addiction. You can’t depend on any particular reason to be the source of your addiction. There isn’t a generic equation to the problem that applies to everyone.

However, that is part of the reason that addiction can be treated and resolved. You are a unique person, with your own experiences, weaknesses, and strengths. By counseling you through these circumstances and qualities, a solution can be found that fits your exact needs. The problem is the same, but your situation is different, and it’s simply a matter of finding that ground that you can use to walk away from your addiction for good.

With good reason, this is the most common form of abuse. But more often than is considered, self-abuse due to a drug addiction can be just as dangerous and destructive to a family.

It is important to consider the dangers drug abuse has on not only you, but those around you. It has a major effect on your friends and family, destroying your relationships as well as your own physical and mental health. It’s called “abuse” for a reason.
The problem of addiction is the same, and so is the solution, which is beating the addiction. It’s the story that got you there that can be different, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have the same solution. Your story matters and it matters to those who are struggling with the same problem. You can find common ground that can help support you through a seemingly overwhelming time. Whatever situation, there was inevitably something that caused the addiction effect.

And just as there was a cause for your addiction, there is a cause for the effect of sobriety. You need to find the cause that leads to the effect of success. What is worth fighting this addiction? Is it family? Is it your job? Is it a group of friends that struggle with maintaining your friendship? There are so many things that can become a powerful, motivating cause to drive you towards the effect of sobriety. An addiction is like a constant friction that is slowly rubbing away at your spirit, and the only way to stop it is to build calluses in your life to shield you from it. It can become a situation in which you are tumbling deeper into space with nothing to stop you, or a downward spiral that from which you seemingly can’t escape. Being stuck in an addiction, you feel lost with the drug, but you feel lost without it. Withdrawal kills you, but taking the drug kills you more. It’s the only thing that can quell your depression, but it’s fueling your depression at the same time.

The only way to beat this downward spiral of addiction and depression is to fight it with confidence and patience. Be confident that you can stop this addiction. You have what it takes to stop it and you have to believe in yourself. Be patient, it’s not going to get better overnight. Fighting that withdrawal is the key to beating addiction. Don’t do it alone. Counseling and group therapy is important to success. You can beat it, it’s just a matter of will.

It is true that in some cases there is a cause and effect scenario between behavioral disorders and drugs, but the two are not necessarily directly related.

Behavioral disorders can lead to drug abuse because the afflicted individual may fall into unhealthy drug abuse as a compensator for their problem. Proper counseling, evaluation, and a possible prescription can often resolve this, taking away the feeling of need from the abused drug.

Drug abuse can also lead to symptoms of a behavioral disorder based on the effects the drugs have on the brain and the effects of dependency and withdrawal. Most of the time these are merely symptoms of a disorder and are temporary and limited only to the abuse of the drug.

It’s not going to be easy, and it’s not supposed to be. Below are three strategies that can help you beat addiction.

1. Motivators – Keep reminders around you of why you are doing this. Keep pictures of your children, of your wife, or even a pay stub as a reminder that you are doing this to give yourself a better life and provide for yourself and your family.

2. Healthy compensators – Set up compensators that are based on healthy habits in order to help you beat your addiction. Start and maintain regular sleeping habits and eating habits that involve natural, healthy foods.

3. Groups – Be involved in group sessions. Counseling is very important to beating addiction. Having people around you that know what you are going through, know how to help you, and will support you every step of the way is a key component of beating addiction.

Those of us that struggle with it later in life can vouch with the problems that come with it. Below are three strategies that can help you cope with ADHD.

1. Post-its – Post-its are great as helpful reminders. Put them wherever you look regularly: bathroom mirrors, your steering wheel, or on your computer monitor. These reminders can help you stay focused on important tasks.

2. Phone alerts – Set your phone to give you alerts throughout the day. This can help you devote your focus to more important things and also help direct your mind to particular assignments.

3. Lists – Create a list every night and review it every morning. Fill the list with everything you need to do that day. This helps exercise your mind and refresh it with the day’s responsibilities.

But how do you break addiction? Here are three characteristics that can help you get there.

1. Patience – Patience is an important attribute to have in order to fight an addiction. No addiction is going to go away overnight. You have to fight it every day, but it is possible to do it, and patience can help.

2. Commitment – Having determination and commitment is the most important part of beating addiction. Keep fighting, keep the fervor of conquering your addiction and you can defeat it.

3. Confidence – Be confident that you can do it. If you don’t think you can, there’s no way that you will. You have to know that you can beat it, that you will be able to overcome it, and then you can!

These two methods of resolution are often considered a black-and-white distance away from each other, but in actuality both carry qualities of properly removing yourself from the addiction.

Going cold turkey implies that baby steps allow some sort of satisfaction from the addiction, just in smaller amounts. This is an unhealthy way to view it, as technically even within the method of baby steps, you should be cold turkey from the addiction itself. In order to beat addiction, you can’t use the terminology cold turkey or baby steps. Sure, there are phases to beating addiction, but it starts with committing to stopping. You can’t be involved in the addiction anymore, and you have to be willing to take the steps to beat it. Admit the problem, stop the addiction, and get help.

It is possible to only be recognizing symptoms later in life due to possible compensations your parents developed to help you cope with a mild case of ADHD when you were young. However, it is also likely that poor eating or sleeping habits may be contributing to your lack of focus or restlessness.

Symptoms of ADHD can emerge from malnutrition, oversleeping, or lack of sleep, causing a deficiency in focus and an inability to remain still. Energy drinks can cause restlessness, which can bring about symptoms of ADHD temporarily. If you have been experiencing symptoms of ADHD temporarily, try changing your eating and sleeping habits to see if it makes a difference.

If you are concerned with whether or not you have ADHD, it is best to contact a counselor mental healthcare provider to conclude possible treatments.

It is not a good idea to self-diagnose any mental or behavioral disorder and such a process should be conducted by a professional.

Bipolar disorder can sometimes be misdiagnosed as ADHD and vise-versa, as they share a few symptoms in common, but also because some symptoms can appear like other symptoms. Restlessness and hyper activity can both be symptoms of bipolar disorder and ADHD. Sometimes, because hyperactivity requires a lot of energy, there can be a physical “crash”. This can sometimes appear as depression, though it may not be.

In order to be sure of your symptoms, diagnosis, and best solutions, it is wise to consult a counselor for help and treatment.

They are being abused and misused in alarming numbers. Below are three side effects (and therefore reasons to avoid) of behavioral drug abuse.

1. Dependency – Abusing behavioral drugs can cause a dependency to them in order to focus at all. While generally abused to enhance focus briefly, it can cause an inability to focus without them.

2. Opposite of desirable effects – Behavioral drugs can have unhealthy effects when meeting with a brain operating normally. The drugs designed to create a chemical balance, can cause a chemical imbalance, which in turn can cause the opposite of the desired results.

3. Appetite/sleeping habits – Behavioral drugs can severely disrupt normal eating and sleeping habits. It is very possible to go days without sleeping or binge eat for weeks if these drugs are abused.

It is best to avoid behavioral drugs if they are not prescribed to you. If you are having issues after having abused or misused behavioral drugs, contact a counselor or doctor for assistance.

Generally used to enhance academic performance and focus, behavioral drugs are being abused to help with cramming before finals and long nights before midterms.

Prescribed to those suffering from ADHD, these students are sharing or selling their prescriptions to fellow students. Quickly spreading as the best opportunity to better grades, students are abusing these drugs without regard to the possible mental side effects. Misusing these drugs can lead to a dependency that requires the drugs in order to focus at all. These drugs should be avoided due to the mental health risk for those to whom they are not prescribed.

Below are the two most commonly used behavioral drugs.

1. Ritalin – The most commonly used psychostimulant, Ritalin is used to increase the activity of the central nervous system. By doing so, the drug enhances the alertness and attention of the patient. Due to its encouragement of the nervous system, Ritalin has also been used in patients suffering from narcolepsy, as the drug has been shown to decrease fatigue.

2. Adderall – Adderall is considered the successful substitute for Ritalin. Considered to be more effective and longer-lasting than Ritalin, Adderall is proven to be effective at reducing fatigue while increasing alertness and cognitive performance. Adderall has shown some adverse side effects of addiction due to the euphoric sensation brought on by one of its components.

Behavioral drugs should be taken only if prescribed by a doctor. Consult a counselor or psychiatrist if you are concerned you may be suffering from ADHD.

In some mild cases of ADHD, it is possible to solve the problem through counseling and changing daily habits. Organization and memorization practices can help dilute some mild cases of Adult ADHD.

However, the only way to be sure is to contact a counselor or psychiatrist in order to conclude what you are suffering from. Improper eating or sleeping habits can bring about symptoms of ADHD temporarily. If you just recently began showing symptoms, it is likely that you are merely suffering from an imbalance caused by a lack of sleep or poor nutrition. A counselor mental health provider can help you conclude what you may have and the solutions you can take to resolve the problem.

However, Adult ADHD can have severe consequences on one’s lifestyle and should be monitored and treated. Below are three dangers of Adult ADHD.

1. Job security – If you are unable to stay focused and organized at work, Adult ADHD can quickly become a matter of job security. It is important to seek treatment for ADHD to avoid a severe reduction in work performance.

2. Disorganization – Disorganization can negatively affect not only your work, but your social life as well. An inability to remember simple schedules can lead to untimely tardiness to social events and negative experiences at social gatherings.

3. Depression – Depression can form from the frustration and stress of struggling with Adult ADHD. The important thing in this case is to seek help immediately. There is no reason to suffer with Adult ADHD as most symptoms can be reduced significantly with the help of counseling or behavioral drugs.

Below are three side effects that can be experienced.

1. ADHD worsens – ADHD can be caused by different chemical imbalances in the brain. As such, different drugs are meant to balance different chemicals. If you are prescribed the wrong behavioral drug, your ADHD may worsen. If you are not seeing improvement in your symptoms, consult your counselor. Provider.

2. Depression – Some behavioral drugs are meant to reduce certain chemicals in the brain. Sometimes this reduction can create a feeling of depression. If you begin to experience depression, it is imperative you speak with your provider immediately.

3. Appetite – Sometimes ADHD medications can cause a significant increase or decrease in appetite. Generally this isn’t too much of a problem, but if either case becomes excessive, it can lead to being overweight or malnutrition. Monitor any changes in appetite or sleeping habits if you are beginning treatment.

Generally symptoms of ADHD become obvious during the elementary years when academic performance makes it more obvious. Sometimes parents can use social methods and mental practices that help develop techniques that can temporarily mask or control ADHD. Once the parents are no longer around to enforce these methods, symptoms of ADHD can become more prevalent.

If mental practices have worked in the past, often implementing them again can have a positive effect. Generally any implementation of strict organization or memorization techniques can help to some effect with ADHD symptoms. If you are just now showing signs of ADHD, it is possible you may just be experiencing side effects from poor sleeping or eating habits. Malnutrition and fatigue can cause a severe drop in attention and focus. Overeating and energy drinks can also cause a lack of focus and restlessness.

Try adjusting your diet and sleeping habits to see if that makes a difference with your mental performance. If you are still concerned about your focus or restlessness, consult a counselor provider for evaluation.

The reason being that they are highly addictive and have been known to cause drug abuse on a rather regular basis. Here are three problems with opiate drugs.

1. Euphoria - Opiates are designed to reduce pain. They are used in the medical field for patients who are experiencing debilitating pain or have gone through an intensive surgery. A common feeling from this reduction in pain is euphoria, which can become an unhealthy pursuit to maintain the feeling.

2. Addictive - Combined with the feeling of euphoria, opiates are highly addictive. It is very easy to become addictive to opiates, sometimes a single prescription can be enough to cause addictive tendencies.

3. Gateway - Because opiates are a prescription, they are easy to initially get a hold of, but can be hard to continue retrieving. This causes opiates to become a gateway drug to illegal and more dangerous substances that are more readily available.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an opiate addiction, please contact us for help.

Peer pressure, combined with the euphoric feeling of these substances, leads to a quick addiction. Below are three common forms of addiction.

1. Alcohol - Alcohol is the leading addiction problem in the U.S. While legal, it is the cause of hundreds of deaths per year. Alcohol is a common party substance and can easily be abused. When abused, it often causes damage to the liver and brain.

2. Tobacco/nicotine - Tobacco and nicotine, most commonly noted in reference to cigarettes, is one of the leading causes for lung cancer due to the combination of chemicals in cigarettes. It is particularly dangerous because of its proven negative effects on second-hand inhalers.

3. Prescription drugs - Prescription drugs are one of the leading addictions in America, but often go unnoticed due to the technicalities of them being legal. Several prescription drugs are highly addicting and should be avoided unless specifically prescribed for a doctor.

If you are struggling with any form of addiction, please contact a counselor for help.

Alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, or illegal substances are all common forms of addiction that can debilitate and destroy lives. It is important to know how to conquer these addictions before they become too volatile.

The first step to conquering an addiction is realizing you have one. The very next step should be seeking help. It is extremely difficult to fight an addiction by yourself. The ease of distribution, combined with their addictive qualities and dangerous elements, have made prescription drugs a volatile, and sometimes fatal addiction.

Opiates have posed a problem for years because of their highly addictive qualities and dangerous side effects. Many deaths have been related to opiates being combined with other substances to create a fatal concoction. The problem being further enhanced by them constantly being prescribed to patients who are experiencing mild pain, and are easily diverted to the "black market".

Prescription drugs are a dangerous addiction and should be monitored more effectively. Prescription drugs should only be taken if prescribed by a doctor, and in the case of opiates, should be taken only under strict regulations.

And like prescription drugs, medicinal marijuana has become easier to obtain illegally. Because of the complications of its distribution, it is now easier than ever to obtain marijuana illegally.

For medicinal purposes, marijuana proves useful for reducing pain and increasing the comfort of the patient, but when abused, it has shown a decrease in certain brain activity. The more dangerous element of marijuana is the gateway factor. Marijuana is a powerful gateway drug to more addicting and dangerous substances. Marijuana, for the sake of health and legality, should be avoided unless prescribed, and even then should be limited to strict doctoral advisement.

It is important to get balanced sleep so it is also important to find solutions to bad sleeping habits. Below are three solutions to bad sleeping habits.

1. Mild sedatives - Mild over-the-counter sedatives, such as sleeping pills, are great for getting to sleep. However, be sure not to overuse them and oversleep, because that can pose just as much of a problem as too little sleep.

2. Exercise - Exercise can help significantly in keeping your sleeping habits regular. Exercise balances your body and stabilizes your sleep cycle, thereby allowing you to sleep without any aid from pills.

3. Two alarms - If your problem is not falling asleep, but waking up, try setting two alarms. Set one alarm close to you earlier than when you need to wake up, then set another alarm on the other side of the room for when you need to wake up. By forcing your body to stand and move, it is less likely for you to go back to bed.

Unfortunately, bad eating habits form a downward spiral of depression, so therefore should be avoided. Below are three solutions to bad eating habits.

1. Drink water - Often times your body translates thirst for hunger. By drinking water regularly (60-80 oz. per day), you can reduce your appetite and unhealthy amounts of bad food consumption.

2. Fruit - Fruit is not only healthy for you, but is also full of water to satisfy hunger. Optioning fruit for other snacks can leave you satisfied, full, and feeling better about yourself.

3. Exercise - Exercise is a great way to keep your metabolism up and your appetite in check. Exercise can prove an effective appetite manager, while releasing endorphins that make you feel better and less likely to overeat.

Many compensators used are unhealthy and lead to harmful side effects. Below are three common unhealthy compensators.

1. Drugs - Drugs, such as marijuana, cigarettes, or opiates, are common compensators. These compensators can lead to cancer, brain deficiency, or even death.

2. Alcohol - Alcohol is one of the leading unhealthy compensators in America. It is often abused as an escape. Alcohol should be limited when in a social atmosphere and overall avoided when alone.

3. Food/sleep - Sometimes the compensators aren't a mind-altering substance, but simply bad habits. Excessive sleep or eating can be unhealthy compensators. Proper eating habits and proper sleep can actually be more beneficial to a quality life.

Here are three problems with prescription drugs.

1. Distribution - Prescription drugs are easily distributed and attained. Because of this, they are easier to build an addiction to and easier to misuse and abuse.

2. Addictive - Prescription drugs, in particular opiates, are highly addicting and can lead to abuse of more prescription drugs ore illegal substances.

3. Enforcement - Compared to illegal substances, prescription drugs are not monitored or enforced as severely. There should be more information readily available to the public concerning the dangers of prescription drugs.

One in five students is an alarming number that should lead to more strict enforcement of prescription drugs, but compared to illegal substances, prescription medications don't seem to be as closely monitored or enforced due to the difficulty of following legitimate prescriptions.

Psychiatric drugs and opiates pain medication are the most commonly abused By people who generally do not need them in the first place. Opiates are often used for their pain qualities but are particularly dangerous for their addictive qualities and side effects. Medications are frightening mainly because the long-term effects of abuse are unknown, but their use has been proven to cause a mental and physical dependency, and potentially dangerous drug interactions.

Sometimes the drugs are abused in order to improve focus, other times they are misused as a self-medication to resolve a self-diagnosis. If either is the case, here are some dangers to consider before self-medicating with behavioral drugs.

1. Organ damage – Taking an unhealthy dose of behavioral drugs that are not prescribed by your doctor can result in organ damage. Filtering organs are not designed to filter large doses of chemical compounds of any kind, so it is important to consult your doctor before partaking of any drug.

2. Reverse effects – If the drug you are taking was not prescribed to you, it could actually have the reverse effects that you expect it to have. Some drugs prescribed to ADHD or ADD individuals differ because of different symptoms. You may be experiencing something different, and by taking a behavioral drug without consultation and prescription could result in effects worse than the initial problem.

3. Dependency – If you take a drug that is not prescribed to you that you may not need, you could quickly build up an unnatural dependency for it. This means that you could build a requirement for your body to have the drug in your system in order to function normally.

If you feel you are suffering from ADHD, please consult your doctor before taking any prescription drugs.

1. Spasms – Muscle spasms or twitches can be a common side effect of some behavioral drugs. The mind can translate the change in chemical activity into involuntary muscle movements. This can be a rather limited problem, but would require further medication to relax.

2. Increased hyperactivity – Sometimes behavioral drugs can have the reverse effects of what was initially intended. In some cases it can increase hyperactivity or inability to focus rather than decrease it.

3. Unstable eating or sleeping habits – Behavioral drugs can negatively affect sleeping and eating habits, causing an inability to sleep or changes in appetite. Generally this can be resolved with appetite suppressants and mild sleeping pills, but can affect mental and physical health if not treated.

The above side effects can become serious or detrimental to your health. It is important to seek help immediately if you are experiencing any adverse effects from your medication. Consult your doctor about the possible side effects of any behavioral drug you or your family may be prescribed to prevent further prescriptions or provide ways to avoid these issues.

ADHD is usually present when an individual is seven years of age or younger. However, due to strict and organized parenting that brought about effective coping mechanisms, ADHD may not have become apparent until later in life.

If this is the case, ADHD might possibly be resolved through developing more mature coping mechanisms, and not necessarily behavioral drugs. Generally, if there were successful coping mechanisms as a child, there should be effective mechanisms that can be used as an adult that can be discovered through counseling and determination.

If you feel you may be suffering from ADHD as an adult, please consult your counselor for some counseling methods to help you cope.

These coping mechanisms can sometimes be an effective alternative to behavioral drugs.

1. Ritual – Maintaining a consistent regimen every day can help you stay focused on important tasks. Building a habit of completing daily tasks helps the mind maintain a level of attentiveness and cognition.

2. Organization – Keeping schedules and lists helps maintain a steady awareness of activities and important tasks. Keeping several lists and calendars in the home can be a great way to stay organized and focused on daily and weekly goals.

3. Reminders – Cell phones and PDA’s are great ways to stay focused on tasks and stay aware of important goals. Setting a noisy alert for daily activities and a reminder for future events can help your mind stay alert and focused on the present and future.

Because stimulants increase particular brain activity, non-stimulants, such as Strattera and Intuniv, can be used to balance particular negative side effects.

Whereas stimulants trigger dopamine, non-stimulants block it, causing a decrease in activity. This can bring about a calmer state of being, but also can lead to dangerous levels of depression. Non-stimulants, as well as antidepressants, may cause adverse effects in some rare cases. If the depression worsens, it is best to consult your counselor immediately. Non-stimulants can also be used to reduce dependency on stimulants when addiction has taken place. Below is a brief breakdown of each drug:

Strattera, selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor:

Prevents the brain from using up its natural norepinephrine and keeping an appropriate amount in the proper areas to help symptoms of ADHD.

Intuniv selective alpha 2a-adrenergic receptor agonist:

Provides a calming effect on the nervous system to help with impulsive and defiant behavior that often accompanies ADHD.

However, there are many cases in which the problem was resolved through medication. Here are some common stimulants used for ADHD.

1. Ritalin – Ritalin contains methylphenidate, which increases the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain to reduce the symptoms of ADHD. In the short-term, this medication has been shown to successfully increase the focus of the individual and improve academic attentiveness.

2. Dexedrine – Dexedrine contains dextroamphetamine, which is a psychostimulant that increases focus and wakefulness. While it produces a similar reaction to Ritalin, Dexedrine is not generally used as often as Ritalin.

3. Adderall – Adderall is somewhat a combination of the two above stimulants that is used to increase the cognitive performance of the individual. Recently it has been noted that this drug is commonly abused in colleges and high schools to increase academic performance during finals and test weeks.

These stimulants can be effective in treating ADHD, but should be prescribed by a doctor and only taken as directed.

While ADHD is generally an inattentive disorder, bipolar disorder is an emotional disorder. Both, however, are behavioral disorders with some similar symptoms.

Bipolar disorder is generally characterized by bouts of extreme happiness and extreme depression. Bipolar disorder is most commonly recognized by the extreme changes in both emotional states in a rather short period of time.

Due to their hyperactivity, those suffering from ADHD may appear bipolar with their intensive emotional responses. However, ADHD is completely different from bipolar disorder, as ADHD generally does not entail bouts of severe depression like bipolar disorder.

If you are concerned you or a family member may be struggling with either ADHD or bipolar disorder, contact a counselor or psychiatrist for assistance.

While they are very similar in many ways, they are slightly different in both symptoms and diagnosis.
ADD, or Attention-Deficit Disorder, is actually a form of ADHD known as ADHD-PI, or Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Predominantly Inattentive.

ADD is a common term to describe the disorder, but it is, in essence, a part of ADHD, in which only a portion of the symptoms is significantly present. One who suffers from “ADD” is actually experiencing ADHD, but only suffering from a single symptom of the disorder on a large scale.

ADHD is basically “ADD” with hyperactivity and impulsivity (among others) symptoms along with it. Because ADHD is such a prominent disorder covering several symptoms, it is often broken into sub-categories, the most common being “ADD”.

Here are some signs that ADHD may be present.

1.Hyperactivity – If your child is unable to slow down for extended periods of time and is constantly in motion, your child could possibly be suffering from ADHD. You may notice that even while sitting, your child may be constantly moving his or her legs or tapping his or her fingers.

2. Inability to stay focused – This is generally the most noticeable symptom of ADHD as it tends to negatively affect academic progress. This is easily noticeable through declining grades, insufficient focus, and teacher concerns that may be brought to your attention.

3. Impulsivity – Your child may speak with reckless abandon, unconcerned with the consequences. Though unprovoked, your child may shout or throw a tantrum, then retreat to a calm state immediately following the incident. This symptom can often be misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, which is why it is important to consult a psychiatrist or counselor if there is concern.

It is most easily identified by the attention problems associated with the disorder and has become the most internationally common disorder found in children.

Because ADHD shares similar symptoms with other major behavioral disorders, such as bipolar disorder, it is easy for it to be misdiagnosed, and therefore mistreated. The disorder is known primarily for its inattentive symptoms, but also sufferers of the disorder may experience impulsivity and hyperactivity.

If you are concerned that you or a family member may be suffering from ADHD, please consult a counselor or psychiatrist to find a resolution.

1.Cannot socialize without alcohol – If your friend feels the need to bring alcohol or address alcohol at every social gathering, it is possible they may be suffering from alcoholism. There is nothing wrong with alcohol at social gatherings, but if your friend is incapable of socializing without it could pose a problem.

2. Alcohol is always present – In the home, in the refrigerator, or in hand, if alcohol is always present, your friend may be struggling with an addiction to alcohol. A constant presence of alcohol can be caused by or led by depression, so discussing the problem is important.

3. Always inebriated when alcohol present – If your friend is incapable of controlling himself in the presence of alcohol, that is a telltale sign of alcoholism. Constantly in an inebriated state when around alcohol shows a lack of self control and addictive qualities associated with.

Alcoholism carries with it many similar dangers associated with substance abuse, such as organ damage or failure, abuse-related deaths, and legal restriction abuses.

Because alcohol, like prescription drugs, is legal, it is more difficult to monitor. Just like with prescription drugs, it is often the responsibility of the individual, friends, and family to moderate alcohol and identify problems that require treatment. It is important to acknowledge possible alcohol issues that you or a friend may have so that treatment may be found.

Mood swings are common emotional responses that are often brought about by stress or lack of sleep. Mood swings can be as mild as irritability or extreme reactions due to emotional sensitivity. Generally mood swings are nothing to worry about unless you experience them on a regular basis, have them one week in a row and the reactions are powerful enough to be harmful.

Bipolar disorder can become a social and emotional problem that can be treated through counseling and medication. If you think you are experiencing elongated periods of extreme irritability, please contact a family member or counselor for evaluation. Bipolar disorder, especially when volatile, can become a dangerous disorder.

Prescription drugs require doctors’ approval because of their dangers when misused or abused. Here are three dangers to self-medicating.

1. Misdiagnosis – Considering you are not a professional in the medical field, you can easily misdiagnose your situation. Even educated guesses based on past experiences are not enough to diagnose one’s self.

2. Overdosing – Without being prescribed properly with instruction, it is easy to overdose with the drug. Prescription drugs are generally powerful and must be limited, possibly damaging the body, even if over used over a significant amount of time.

3. Fatal mixing – Many people have died for mixing prescription drugs. This problem often happens because of miscommunications with doctors or self-medicating. It is important to make your doctor aware of all drugs you are taking in order to avoid mixing a fatal concoction of drugs.

Someone who suffers from this disorder is in a constant state of fear and worry concerning the thoughts of others referring to him or her.
1. Sweating – Sweating is a bodily response from exertion, heat, or stress. In this case, someone suffering from this disorder can be sweating from the stress of being in a social environment, such as a dinner or party. As the person attempts to stay calm, the body responds to the stress by sweating.

Here are some things to do for depression:

1. Sleep - There are many things that affect your chemical balance and therefore your mental state. A lack of sleep can leave your mind tired, making you irritable and exhausted, which can often translate as depression. Consistent sleep times help. Get into a routine.

2. Nutrition - A balanced diet of food keeps you energized and prevents chemical imbalance in the body and mind. Eating too much junk food can leave the body malnourished, but full, often leading to depression like symptoms.

3. Exercise - Exercise releases endorphins into the body, creating a natural treatment of depression. A good run every day, after a good night's sleep, can really increase your mind's positive perceptions.

There is a difference between feeling sad and depressed. If you are feeling depressed on a regular basis, it would be best to be evaluated by a counselor or psychiatrist (MD).

If someone you know is experiencing depression, it is important to report it to a counselor. Here are three ways to identify depression.

1. Sleeping habits – When someone is depressed, he usually sleeps for extended periods of time, sometimes not leaving the bed for days, skipping activities such as work or social obligations. This lack of desire to get up can often be associated with depression.

2. Eating habits – Eating habits can increase or decrease during depression. They can either refuse to eat, or use food as a substitute to compensate for the depression. This is usually an extreme case, in which binging or anorexia may be taking place.

3. Social habits – Participation in social activities is usually significantly reduced. Combined with excessive sleeping, a lack of activity with friends in family can be a strong sign of depression.

Most episodes of “depression” experienced by the average person are normal responses of sadness that have been caused by lack of sleep, stress, or malnourishment. The response of the brain to addictive medication is something that translates as depression. Based on severity of depression, medication treatment may be needed.

However, extreme “fits” of depression or elongated emotions parallel with depression can be serious and life threatening if not monitored, counseled, and treated. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, days of being in a depressed state, or bipolar emotional responses, it is advised you speak with a family member and counselor to be evaluated for your own health. There is no reason to live your life in a saddened state. Please contact us or seek help if you are concerned you may be experiencing these types of symptoms.

But how can you be supportive? Here are a couple of ways to be supportive.

1. Hate the substance, not the addict – Make sure to be blaming the drug, not the addict. Your friend or family member is not the problem; they are simply struggling from a problem. Help your friend remove the problem, not treat your friend as the problem.

2. Support the good, not ridicule the bad – Celebrate progress and good behavior. If there is a relapse or time of struggle, help them get through this rough period. Self-esteem is a large part of drug addiction, so by shaming them at bad times can only lead to worsening of the symptoms.

3. Don’t cradle – There is a difference between supporting and enabling the addicted individual. The addiction is not okay, and it is important your friend understands that. Don’t cradle your friend because of the addiction; support your friend for their need to become sober and clean.

Here are a few steps in identifying an addiction.

1. Sleeping habits – An increase in sleeping or a lack of ability to sleep can be related to drug addiction. Irregular sleeping patterns are on the HALLMARK symptoms of withdrawal from numerous substances.

2. Headaches – Withdrawal from a relatively mild substance such as caffeine can cause painful headaches. Strong prescription drugs can produce dependency and may cause your body to feel pain when you attempt to discontinue the drug. Headaches are a common symptom of such withdrawal.

3. Honesty – When it comes to prescription drugs, such as strong painkillers, you know when you no longer need the drug. If the pain is significantly improved, most people will discontinue the use but you are finding yourself needing more prescription drugs, in the absence of pain then reevaluate the dependency. Being honest with yourself can save you heartache later.

Here are a few important ways to get help.

1. Recognize the problem – The first step is acknowledging that there is a problem. It takes someone close to you who is concerned, to recognize and bring up your recent behavior. If you are concerned you may have a problem, there is no harm in pursuing treatment.

2. Tell a family member – Tell someone close to you, like a family member or loved one, that you may have a substance abuse problem. Getting someone close to you who can support you is very important to the rehabilitation process.

He went on to say that the island has been used to test the popularity of products in the past, so this has been an effective method used throughout the island’s history.

There has been recorded success and failure of legalizing drugs in several different countries. In some countries, it significantly reduced crime and a large amount of people felt comfortable seeking help. However, other countries such as Mexico, have suffered under the legalizing of drugs with crime skyrocketing.

To have just a small percentage of the population experience the legalizing of drugs to test its effects on the community could be an effective way to determine how it would affect an entire country. Addictive qualities – Over-the-counter medicines rarely carry with them an addictive quality, however a large percentage of prescription drugs have an addictive side effect. Consult your doctor on the possible addictive qualities of any prescription drug you may be taking.

2. Risk of overdose – While certainly possible with any drug and should be avoided at any cost, the side effects and possibility of overdose with an over-the-counter drug is unlikely and not as dangerous. A prescription drug, however, can be deadly if over used or mixed with other drugs. It is important to follow dosage carefully and consult your doctor on combining this drug with any others.

3. Dangers of extensive use – The only negative side effect of extensive over-the-counter drug use is generally an immunity built for the effects of the drug. Extensive prescription drug use can cause organ failure over time and bring about a dependency.

Opiods – (Includes Morphine and Codeine) These drugs are usually given as pain relievers, but are known to be some of the most addictive prescription drugs. Generally abused for the sense of euphoria they can produce, the drugs should be avoided whenever possible to prevent addiction.

2. Nervous System Depressants – (Includes Diazepam and Aleplon) Also providing a sense of euphoria when abused, these drugs can be highly addictive and dangerous to the nervous system and brain. When abused or used for extensive periods of time, these drugs can permanently damage the body. They should be used properly and only when prescribed.

3. Stimulants – (Includes Adderal and Dexedrine) A popular item in high schools and colleges for improving grades, stimulants effect the brain’s response and focus and can provide a sense of euphoria if abused. They are generally not as addicting as other drugs, but if taken by a person whom they are not prescribed can build a dependency.

Being aware of prescription refills between facilities can help identify a possible drug abuse situation or problem with addiction.

2. Dispose the unused – If you yourself have a prescription drug, be sure to dispose of old prescriptions if they are no longer being used. If you need more, you can always go back to the doctor to get a new prescription. But by leaving the drugs in the home, you take the chance of your children getting a hold of them.

3. Monitor amounts – Consult the doctor providing the prescription and be aware of the dose per day. Monitor the amounts taken and if possible keep the prescription drugs locked in a cabinet and only provide the drugs when necessary. This may not be possible in all prescription drug scenarios, but at least being aware of how often a prescription should last can help you stay on top of your child’s drug use.

Parents with prescription drugs in the home that refuse to monitor the drugs are allowing their teenagers to sell and abuse these drugs. High schools and colleges across the nation are experiencing prescription drug abuse on an ever-increasing level.

Because of the legal loophole of prescription drugs being readily available, they are easier to retrieve than illegal narcotics. Prescription refills go unmonitored and parents fail to monitor their own prescription drugs, forgetting to dispose of old prescriptions. Being aware of the increasing problem of prescription is the first step, and now we need to make a difference.

Reliance – Behavioral drugs are generally used for younger patients and do not usually carry with them a dependence. However, if the drug is used in more mature years, it has been known to bring about mental reliance. This is important to consult with your doctor in terms of if or when to wean off the drug.

2. Muscle spasms – Some behavioral drugs cause ticks or muscle spasms that must be controlled by other medications. If this is the case, you may want to consider a different behavioral drug to reduce the intake of different prescriptions that may possibly have more side effects.

3. Appetite disruptor – Behavioral drugs can sometimes affect the appetite, both making it stronger and decreasing appetite. This doesn’t generally pose a problem, but can become a weight or diabetic issue if not monitored.

Addictive properties – By far the biggest problem with most prescription drugs is their addictive property. A large amount of prescription drugs can easily build mental and physical dependency that can further cause damage to the mind and body.

2. Liver damage – One of the many functions of the liver is filtering. When you consume anything that releases chemicals into the body, in many cases it will have an effect on the liver. If a prescription drug is abused or taken for an extensive period of time, it can start to significantly harm the liver.

3. Brain damage – A common side effect of prescription drug abuse, brain damage can come about from mishandling or overdosing on drugs. Because several prescription drugs have an effect on the brain, if they are misused, they can easily harm it.

Being aware of possible problems you may face with your prescription is important. Above all, consulting your doctor on the conditions of your prescription is imperative.

1. Reliance – With a lot of prescription drugs, becoming reliant to them is easy. If the drug is used for an extensive period of time, the body and mind can become dependent on them and can cause withdrawal symptoms or addiction.

2. Addictive qualities – Some prescription drugs are designed to make the mind and body feel better. These drugs tend to carry with them highly addictive properties. Limiting and avoiding use whenever possible is important.

3. Lack of alternatives – The main problem with prescription drugs is the current lack of alternatives that are as effective, but don’t contain the side effects. While there are those who are working tirelessly to reduce addictive properties while maintaining the effectiveness of drugs, the situation remains right now, so being aware of the side effects of the drugs you are taking is important.

Irritability – When someone you know is struggling with an addiction to drugs, they tend to become easily irritable and angry. Their emotional state changes quickly and a bipolar disorder can become apparent. Negative behavior can be a sign of addiction.

2. Absence – If the person’s schedule has changed significantly and the person is absent much more often, this could possibly be a sign of drug abuse. In a teenager, this sign alone may not necessarily be a drug addiction. However, combining irritability and absence from school and other mandatory activities could pose an issue.

3. Body language – Fidgety behavior and muscle spasms are sure signs there could be a drug addiction problem. An inability to sit or stand still and a constant movement of the hands can show either recent drug use or a withdrawal. Discussing the situation with the person in order to find help is important and should be considered if any of these symptoms appear to be happening.

Vicodin – A highly effective but highly addictive narcotic, Vicodin is used as a severe pain reliever. Many patients who use this drug find themselves dependent on its euphoric effect, even after a short period of usage. Consult your doctor for alternatives if possible, or watch dosage carefully.

2. Oxycodone – Used as a moderate to severe pain reliever, Oxycodone does not tend to carry with it as heavy an addiction as Vicodin, but still can create a dependency. It has been known to have significant withdrawal symptoms that can encourage abuse to decrease the symptoms.

3. Demerol – This drug was designed to be as effective as morphine, but without the dangerous addictive properties. This, unfortunately, was not the case as it has been determined that Demerol is less effective than morphine and still carries highly addictive qualities. In fact, because of its short duration of effectiveness, Demerol requires a large amount in order to maintain its euphoric effects. It is no longer used as often, but is still used for particular cases involving pain and muscle spasms.

The symptoms included elevated heart rate and euphoria. The students were immediately taken to the local hospital where it had been confirmed that they had ingested marijuana. Upon investigation, the students admitted to eating some birthday cake earlier that had been brought in by a peer. The cake had been laced with marijuana and served unbeknownst to the students that partook of the cake. The student responsible was arrested for endangerment charges.

The policy in most school districts is that foods prepared from home are not to be shared with fellow students. Despite this policy, the moral of this story would be to avoid being on the receiving-end of this dessert. In most scenarios, the possibility of a food being laced with an illegal drug is slim. To avoid similar circumstances, it is best to remain hesitant of any snacks or treats laid out at a party, being sure of its contents and ingredients before consumption.

Upon investigating his death, they discovered a disturbing lifestyle that had been brewing near the surface. Corey had become adept at doctor shopping, accumulating 553 drugs in his last year.

Doctor shopping is the act of a patient going to several different doctors for the same symptoms (often faked symptoms) in order to retrieve prescription drugs to fulfill an addiction. This process can be hard to monitor, and therefore hard to combat without the cooperation of the addict.

Corey died last month with symptoms of pneumonia, his death most likely caused by the combination of drugs with the illness. He had retrieved prescriptions from over twenty doctors, accumulating drugs such as the muscle relaxer Soma, the painkiller Norco, and Oxycontin. His untimely death should leave us with the message of avoiding prescription drugs for any reason other than medicinal purposes.

Corey’s unfortunate passing is one of many sad stories related to prescription drug addiction. If you’re suffering from a similar case, don’t hesitate to contact Solace Counseling so we can be there for you.

Partaking of these drugs, despite their seemingly positive or euphoric effects, can cause severe issues in the near to late future. Stimulant drugs have become an issue lately due to their immediate effects of providing focus for college students during crunch time. Here is a short list of those related drugs and the dangerous side effects associated with them.

Ephedrine – This drug is most commonly misused in order to stay awake and alert for long periods of time. The possible negative side effects of abusing Ephedrine are strokes and heart attacks.

Ritalin – One of the most commonly known drugs used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder in children, this drug is misused by college students and adults to bring about acute awareness and sometimes euphoria. However, if the drug is abused, it can cause strokes, heart attacks, seizures, and liver damage.

Adderall – One of the more popular abused drugs out now for college students, this drug helps increase concentration and cognitive performance in the short term, used primarily for ADHD. While helpful in the short term to be more efficient in cramming for an exam, when this drug is abused it can cause many of the aforementioned ailments, but also has been known to be a powerful gateway drug. This stimulant drug, able to cause significant damage on its own, can also lead to more extreme, illegal drug use such as cocaine and heroin.

If you’re experiencing an addiction to any of the above drugs, please contact Solace Counseling. We want to be there for you to get you through.

Possible Side Effects – If there are any side effects of the drug, it can lead to more drugs to compensate for the side effects. This can be a dangerous pattern and should be researched with a doctor before pursuing.

2. Counseling – Consider counseling before mind-modifying drugs. If the drug is not necessarily needed, it can cause greater issues in the future, both physically and mentally. Counseling is a safe and effective step before drugs should be considered. If a counselor recommends a behavioral drug, don’t hesitate to ask questions and for alternatives.

3. Mild Alternatives – When being offered behavioral drugs for your child, ask the doctor for any mild alternatives that you can begin with, or any natural substitutes that can have a similar effect. Consider all the possible alternatives before making a decision.

4. Changes at Home – Changes in environment and diet can make a compelling difference in behavior. Reducing fat and sugar-laden foods can help control excess energy in a child and can calm many symptoms of a behavioral disorder. Monitoring sleeping habits and television time can also help with possible behavioral issues. Try these simple steps before considering a drug solution and the drug may not even be necessary.

Asking your doctor a few questions about the drug being prescribed can help save you some pain later.

1. Are there any possible side effects? Be sure to ask your doctor of the possible side effects of taking the drug. Sometimes the side effects can bring about more medication that must be taken. This situation can get expensive, and in some cases, dangerous.

2. What is the possibility of addiction? Before taking a drug, it is important to consider the possibility of addiction. Painkillers can be particularly addicting, so reducing dosage or the amount of pills can be a small step to avoiding addiction.

3. Are there any alternatives? Ask for natural or mild alternatives that can reduce the possibility of side effects or addiction. In many cases there are foods or over-the-counter medicines that can provide a similar effect to your symptoms that have fewer or mild side effects.

Being aware of the possibility of an addiction is a step in the right direction. If you’re questioning an addiction to prescription drugs, contact Solace Counseling, and we can be there for you.

Due to his injuries, the doctors determine he requires surgery. Once the surgery is complete and the man regains consciousness, he finds himself in intolerable pain from the combination of the accident and the surgery. The man is offered and prescribed painkillers from the doctors. The man gladly accepts the medicine and immediately begins his dosage. Over the next few weeks, the pain has subsided substantially, but still lingers. The man continues to take the painkillers despite the need. The pain begins to flare up between doses, becoming more painful between pills. He calls his doctor and the doctor increases his dosage. The man, without realizing it, has become addicted to a painkiller.

Painkillers pose a huge problem in the hospital environment. Doctors cannot determine one’s personal pain and can only make an educated guess on a solution. It is important to ask your doctor the side effects, addiction tendencies, and refill expectations of any drug offered. When it comes to painkillers, a consistent dosage is not important. Only take the painkiller when absolutely necessary. Reassess your personal situation before taking each pill. When the pain has subsided, dispose of any excess pills in a safe manner. Do not keep the temptation in the home whenever possible.

The aforementioned situations happen all the time, and often are outside of your control. If you are stuck in a similar situation with prescription drugs, please contact Solace Counseling so we can help you through.

This is a startling statistic considering the constant attention to the dangers of illegal drugs. Because prescription drugs are provided by doctors for health reasons, they are often ignored as possible health threats. However, when abused, prescription drugs become more addicting and deadly than most illegal drugs.

Due to the legality of prescription drugs, they are more readily available in several different formats. This makes prescription drugs a much more dangerous affliction than illegal drugs. While neither illegal drugs nor prescription drugs should be abused, prescription drugs need to be realized as a more significant threat to good health when abused.

Certain behavioral drugs prescribed can help the mind focus in academic environments. These drugs are prescribed by doctors, usually after counseling that has determined the need for the drug for that particular student. While it can be a benefit, if abused, it can cause physical and mental issues. These drugs have recently been circulating illegally to students without disorders so that they can take tests and finish homework more efficiently.

The abuse of these drugs can cause mental issues that cause physical reactions, such as muscle spasms or twitching. The long-term effects of the abuse of these drugs is currently a mystery, but the expectations of addiction and mental deterioration are frightening possibilities. Consulting a doctor before taking these drugs is a must, as these drugs are compensators, and there can be dangerous consequences to the compensators having nothing to compensate.

Stimulants can appear to be helpful drugs, but they can be dangerous and addictive. If you or a loved one is experiencing a similar addiction, don’t hesitate to contact Solace Counseling for help. Help yourself so we can help you.

3. Prescription drugs aren’t as addicting as illegal drugs – Many prescription painkillers are opiates, which can be highly addicting. The greater danger of prescription drugs is the addiction can come quick and without notice. It is important if prescribed a painkiller to only use it if absolutely necessary and consult a physician before considering a refill.

4. No negative effects recovering from surgery, so continued use should have no side effects – There are several reasons why a prescription bottle of drugs is limited to a small amount. The drug can become addicting, can cause brain damage if abused, or it can cause organ damage or failure if used repeatedly over time. Prescription drugs have their purpose, but once that purpose is satisfied, it is imperative to your health to discontinue use.

5. Doctors cannot provide illegal substances – This misconception is two-fold. A prescription drug is not illegal initially, but if it is not prescribed properly, it becomes illegal. A doctor can also be willing to sacrifice the duty of his position to provide prescription drugs illegally. It is important to understand that simply because it is a prescription drug, does not make it legal in the wrong hands.

Once a drug replaces a healthy state of mind, it is hard to break. Stopping before starting can save your life, so here are some ways to get a kick naturally and healthily.

1. Balanced Diet – There are several foods out there that help relax the body and mind that work great with a balanced diet of vitamins and minerals. If your body is at peace, drugs are not required to fill a need. Almonds are an effective snack for lowering blood pressure and stress levels and can be a great natural substitute to a destructive drug.

2. Balanced Sleep Schedule – Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can keep your mind stable and your body feeling good. Staying rested keeps your mind and body at ease. A great substitute to a drug is a good nap.

3. Friends – Laughter truly is the best medicine, and there is nothing like spending a night with a group of friends having a good time. Friends can be a great support and distraction from considering a drug substitute. A friend is an effective and tangible substitute to prescription drug abuse.

4. Support – Support groups and counseling are a great substitute to drug abuse. Any time there is an urge, your group can be there to help you every step of the way. Drug abuse tries to fill a need that can easily be satisfied with positive communication between people, so a support group is a great substitute for drugs. If you’re stuck in a similar situation, Solace can be there for you. Reach out, and we’ll reach back.

The two main sources where children get prescription drugs are from their parents medicine cabinets and the internet. Here is some advice for talking to your children about prescription drugs.

1. For preschoolers-Tell your children that medicines can not only make you better but can also harm them. Tell them not to put ANYTHING in their mouths unless hey what it is.

2. For Ages 5-8 Years- Tell your children that medications are not the only way to make you feel better. State the importance of diet and exercise. Tell them to never takes medications from anyone unless it is from them, or doctors.

3. For Ages 9-11 Year Olds- Learn about the effects of prescription medications and discuss and share information. Instruct them how to say no if they are ever asked to try drugs. Establish consequences.

4. For Ages 12-14 Year Olds- Graphically describe side effects of taking prescription drugs. Reinforce that taking Rx medications the wrong way can result in illness and or death.

5. For 15-17 Year Olds- Research the legal ramifications of trading or selling prescription drugs. Inventory all the Rx medications in the home. Keep close tabs of your children's internet usage.

If this addiction goes untreated for a long period of time, this struggle is made more difficult. Most prescription drug addicts do not admit to having a problem until they are very deep into their addiction. Family and friends play an important role in identifying that their loved ones receive treatment for their addiction.

Every individual is different. Drug habits vary according to the drugs in question. These following symptoms are the majority that are seen in those who have developed a prescription drug problem.

1. Euphoric Behaviour- Opiate-based painkillers such as oxycontin will cause extreme euphoria by individuals when taking them.

2. Aches, pains, Nagging Illnesses- In between doses do Rx meds the individual is likely to develop moderate illnesses and aches and pains. Prescription drugs alter the nerves in the brain that regulate pain and illness. When the drug intake stops, the body is often thrown into anarchy.

3. Irritability and Mood Swings- In between doses, addicts can have mood swings. This can cause anxiety and depression.

4. Chills and Fever- Fever-like symptoms are a sign of withdrawal. The body reacts to having the flu when an individual stops taking the Rx.

5. Withdrawal From Family and Friends- To the addict, nothing is more important than finding and taking the drug in question.

6. Unethical Behaviour- Prescription Drug Addicts may 'doctor shop' as well as steal from family and friends.

7. Criminal Behaviour- Finally, many prescription drug addicts will steal money to support their habit. Also some addicts will engage in prostitution and robberies of doctor's offices and pharmacies.

Court case loads and over populated jails are also to blame.

"This severe problem is tough to fight" states Dickenson County Sheriff Bobby Hammons. The last decade has had a large increase in prescription drug addictions and arrests. This is creating a huge, problematic dilemma for law officials.

Even though other drugs are still in demand, law officials are seeing an increased addiction to opioid pain killers. There are two other classes of medications besides opioids that officials are seeing being abused. These are anti depressants and stimulants. These meds are used to treat narcolepsy and ADHD. They can stimulate the brain and cause people to become high if not used for medical reasons.

There is some good news however. Due to the high publicity of opioid pain killers, people are more afraid of trying them due to their addictive, lethal nature. Also, doctors and pharmacists are very aware of these medications being used to get high rather than treatment of a medical condition. Doctors are now not over prescribing. Pharmacists are on high alert for forged Rx forms.

It takes a community as a whole to help put an end to the war on prescription drugs. Hopefully we will see a decline in prescription drugs used to get high, therefore a decline in crime.

They are just as susceptible to drug addiction. Those who get the help they so desperately need, are actually performing a public service by sharing their personal stories.

The mega popular, conservative host, Rush Limbaugh, was forced to admit his long-term addiction to vicodin and oxycontin. He was charged with illegally receiving a shipment of these prescription meds. Rush admitted to his addiction and entered a drug rehab. This event provided satisfaction for critics of a man aho has always portrayed himself above others.

Chevy Chase, the comedian known for Saturday Night Live and comical movies, spent decades battling an addiction to painkillers. He was in pain due to a pratfall in television. He used painkillers to ease this pain. After his addiction made him reach rock bottom, Chevy checked himself into The Betty Ford Clinic.

Elvis Presley's talent was being destroyed by his multiple addictions to prescription medications. This happened long before the boom in prescription drug abuse. Elvis first started using drugs when he was in the military. His addiction was to stimulants. The pressure of his music career lead to many other prescription pill addictions. Presley died in 1977 as a result of a massive overdose.

There are no proven meds at this time for treatments for stimulant addiction. The NIDA however, is supporting a number of studies on potential medications for treating stimulant addictions.

The first steps in treating a stimulant addiction depends on the patient's situation. The first steps include the tapering of the drug dosage and attempting to ease withdrawal symptoms. Followed after these steps is a detoxification process, along with behavioral therapies. Contingency management works as well. Also recovery support groups are a useful tool in conjunction with behavioral therapies. It is also important to focus on modifying the patients thinking expectations and behaviours. At the same time the patient needs to increase their skills for coping with various life stressors.

There are several options available fro treating prescription opioid drug addiction adequately. These options are gathered from research in the treatment of heroin patients. These treatments include medications such as naltrexone, methadone, and buprenorphine, as well as behavioural counselling approaches.

The medication naltroxone, blocks the effects of opioids and is used to treat opioid addiction and overdose. Methadone is a synthetic opioid that blocks the effects of opioids, eliminates withdrawal symptoms, and relieves the frantic drug cravings. Methadone has been used successfully for over 30 years to treat heroin addiction. Buprenprphine was approved in 2002 and can be prescribed by certified physicians in an office setting. It is long lasting, less likely to cause respiratory depression like many of the other drugs, and is well received.

Detoxification is also used for long term opioid addiction. This in itself is not a treatment. It's primary objective is to relieve withdrawal symptoms, while the upload patient adjusts to being drug free. In order for detoxification to be effective, this treatment must preceded long-term treatment that requires complete abstinence or incorporate a medication into a treatment program.

Years of research has proven this. there is not one single treatment that is appropriate fro all individuals addicted to prescription medications. The type of drug used and the needs of the individual must be taken into account when deciding on a proper treatment. In order for a treatment o be successful, several components, including detoxification, counselling, and in some cases, pharmacological therapies all need to be incorporated. In order for a patient to make a successful recovery, multiple courses of treatments may need to be used.

There are two essential categories of drug addiction treatment. These treatments are behavioural and pharmacological. Behavioural treatments encourage patients to put an end to drug use, and handle a relapse if that should occur. These treatments include individual counselling, contingence management, and cognitive-behavioural therapies.

Some addictions, such as opioid addiction, can be treated with medications. These drug treatments, counter the effects these drugs have on the brain. They also relieve withdrawal symptoms, treat an overdose, and or prevent drug cravings. Effective research shows that a combination of behavioral and pharmacological approaches are more useful when combined to treat opioid addiction.

They also need to provide information on the effects this medication may have and about any possible drug interactions. Pharmacists can help prescription Freud by looking for false or altered prescription forms. Many pharmacies have developed 'hotlines' to alert other pharmacies in the region when a fraud is detected.

There are several ways in which patients can prevent prescription drug abuse. Provide a complete medical history and description of the reason of the visit. This will ensure that the doctor understands the complaint and prescribe appropriate medication. It is extremely important to follow the directions for use carefully and learn about the possible effects these drugs can have. Also be aware of possible interactions with other drugs by reading all provided information. Never increase or decrease or abruptly stop taking a prescribed medication without consulting with your health care provider. Finally, never take another's prescription.

If you notice that you are taking these meds for more reasons than what they were prescribed, it is important to discuss this with your physician in order to address the issue of drug abuse.

Therefore, health care providers are in an exclusive position to prescribe medications to their patients in need, as well as recognize and prevent a prescription drug addiction when it exists. They are also responsible for setting goals for recovery and seeking the appropriate treatment when need be. What can also be incorporated into a routine history in taking any past or current drug abuse issues. This screening can be done by asking questions about what prescriptions and OTC medications the patient is taking and what for. Screening can also be done if the patient a question presents symptoms associated with drug abuse.

Health care providers should note any rapid increase in the amount of a medication. This may indicate the development of tolerance or frequent requests for refills before the quantity prescribed should run out. Health care provider should also be on high alert for their addicted patients who engage in 'doctor shopping'. Dr. shopping means moving from provider to provider in order to get multiple prescriptions for the specific drug they abuse.

A major part of patient care is preventing or putting an end to prescription drug abuse. The difficult part is that heath care providers should not avoid prescribing or administering opioids, sedatives and antidepressants if they are truly needed for medical reasons. It is fair to say that health care providers walk a delicate line when prescribing medications.

According to a recent survey on Drug Use and Health. An estimated 4.7 million Americans use prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. 2.5 million use pain relievers, 1.2 million use tranquilizers, 761,000 use stimulants and 225,000 use sedatives.

The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), monitors medications and illicit drugs used in sending people to the emergency rooms. DAWN reported that the two most frequently reported Rx in drug abuse related cases are benzodiazepines and opioid pain killers.

In 2002, benzodiazepines accounted for 100,784 drug abuse cases. Opioid pain relievers accounted for 119,00 cases. This is only what was documented. Hydrocodone and Oxycodon increased rapidly by 170-450%. These are dramatic increases in prescription drug abuse cases. It is certainly on the rise a continuing to climb. Benzodiazepines and Opioids are the new trend in the drug culture today.

Everyday 2,500 teens, ages 12-17 will abuse prescription drugs fro the first time. This information comes from The Office of the National Drug Control Policy. It is the easy access to these medications like vicodi and oxycontin that is tempting teens to try these lethal medications. 70% of teens that confessed to using these medications stated that they got these prescriptions from their parents or friends medicine cabinets.

Dr. Drew Pinsky is a practicing medical Doctor and is board certified in internal and addiction medicine. He is also a best selling author and the host of Celebrity Rehab and Lovelines. He recently deputed the Rx Locker, due to the rising statistics of teenage prescription drug abuse. This device is designed to secure Rx medications within the home to restrict unwarranted access and prevent abuse.

Dr. Drew and his team created the Rx Locker. It is a locking storage device designed to hold up to 4 prescription pill bottles and fit inside a typical medicine cabinet. The chrome, metal combination lock provides accommodating access for the user while ensuring secure storage and privacy. The Rx Locker is currently available atwww.RxLocker.com.

Another problem with not storing medications securely is the easy access for young children. Young children can accidentally find and ingest medications. Even a small dose of these prescriptions can be deadly.

Many people over the age of 65 abuse prescription drugs. 13% of the populations in the United States are persons over 65 years. These people account for approximately one third of all medications prescribed in the U.S. alone. Older patients are more likely to be prescribed long term and multiple prescriptions, which could lead to unintentional mistreatment.

Our elderly are also at a high risk for Rx abuse. They intentionally take meds that are not medically necessary. A large percentage of our seniors also take OTC drugs. Due to their high rates of combative illnesses, changes in dug metabolisms, there is the potential for drug interactions, Rx and OTC drug abuse and misuse. All this can have adverse health consequences; even more seen in the elderly population than our younger population.
