Addiction to harmful substances is common in our society. Peer pressure, combined with the euphoric feeling of these substances, leads to a quick addiction. Below are three common forms of addiction.
1. Alcohol - Alcohol is the leading addiction problem in the U.S. While legal, it is the cause of hundreds of deaths per year. Alcohol is a common party substance and can easily be abused. When abused, it often causes damage to the liver and brain.
2. Tobacco/nicotine - Tobacco and nicotine, most commonly noted in reference to cigarettes, is one of the leading causes for lung cancer due to the combination of chemicals in cigarettes. It is particularly dangerous because of its proven negative effects on second-hand inhalers.
3. Prescription drugs - Prescription drugs are one of the leading addictions in America, but often go unnoticed due to the technicalities of them being legal. Several prescription drugs are highly addicting and should be avoided unless specifically prescribed for a doctor.
