On September 29, 2009 Dr. Oz was featured on
The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss the dangers of prescription drug abuse. According to the
Drug Enforcement Administration, more Americans abuse prescription drugs than cocaine, heroin and ecstasy combined. "What started out as a legitimate prescription for pills from a doctor now has 6 million Americans addicted," Dr. Oz says.
When beloved celebrities like Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger lose their lives to prescription drug overdoses, the epidemic makes headlines. But you don't have to be rich and famous to support a dangerous pill habit. Millions of suburban moms, dads, teachers, nurses and teenagers are becoming pharmaceutical junkies.
Dr. Oz says prescription pill addiction is the most under-appreciated problem in America. "A lot of folks think these drugs aren't dangerous because they're not street drugs," he says. "But there are millions of people who take these prescription medications, not realizing they have the same type of addictive potential as street drugs."
With 6 million Americans being addicted to prescription drugs, it is becoming a severe problem that needs to be addressed. Maybe your pain addiction started after you had surgery, and now your body continues to crave relief from your emotional and physical pain, and now you can't seem to stop and frankly you don't want to stop. Maybe you have a hard time getting stuff done each day and so you went to your doctor to get on stimulants to stay focused. Now you are super productive and notice some nights you don't even need to sleep, you enjoy the weight loss benefits, and feel a high that's hard to describe and so you continue taking them. You feel guilty inside about taking prescription pills, but at the same time you can't seem to stop. You don't have to hide this addiction anymore. It's time to
get help!
