Overcoming Addiction Part 2: Motivation

  • -

In our last post of Overcoming Addiction, we discussed some positive values that can help overcome addiction. In this post we will be discussing motivation and the various ways to discover motivation. Motivation is a very powerful tool at your disposal and it can help you fight addiction all the way to a sober life.

Motivation Tip #1: Family

Family, especially children and significant others, can be powerful motivators. Addiction can divide families and tear relationships apart. It is important to keep this concept in the forefront of your mind. You don’t want to lose your family or even your friends. Keeping a photo of your children or your significant other with you can be a constant reminder of what you are fighting for. If you want to beat addiction you have to know what you are fighting for. Family and friends are valued motivators to fight for.

Motivation Tip #2: Quality of Life

If it was not tip #1, family, that got you to commit to becoming sober, it was your own acknowledgement that your quality of life was going down hill. Your life was gaining nothing from the addiction. In fact, it was being destroyed by it. Instead of the addiction improving your view and feelings on your life, it has debilitated it, leaving you less satisfied than ever. Think about the changes you can make without this addiction in your life. Without it ruling your life you can do so much more to make your life what you truly want it to be. Drugs can be a powerful distraction from your goals. With it out of the way you can make a bigger difference in your own life.

Motivation Tip #3: The Past

Think about two different elements of your past. First, think about what life was like before your addiction. You had far fewer cares or worries and you weren’t constantly scratching to satisfy your addiction. Even if life wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t as bad as being a slave to your addiction. And think about that, your past with this addiction. Do you really want to go the rest of your life struggling with this addiction? Wanting to return to the past without the drug and escape the past with the drug and be a great motivational tool to help you overcome the addiction. In the next post about Overcoming Addictions, we will discuss the importance of a support system and good and bad of certain kinds of support.
