For the next several posts, we will be reviewing some basic principles that can help one overcome addiction. There are various avenues and solutions that work for different people with different pasts. It is important to find the avenue that works best for you and tackle the addiction head on. This first post will focus on values, a set of virtues that, when disciplined and put into action, can be very effective for beating addiction.
Value #1: HumilityBeing humble when it comes to addiction is very important. Humility leads to admission that there is a problem and also admission that you can’t do it alone. Seeking help for addiction is a very important step. Addiction is far more difficult thing to conquer by yourself. It is better to fight addiction with an army of friends and family than on your own.
Value #2: PatienceYou have to acknowledge the fact that the addiction will not go away all at once. It will take time and patience to beat it. Addiction thrives off of the fact that it makes a person feel it is needed. In order to beat addiction, it is important to understand that you may falter or struggle, but that the struggles are normal and a part of beating the addiction.
Value #3: ConfidenceHave confidence that you can succeed. Beating an addiction requires confidence, a sense of cockiness that says that you can do this. It will be a struggle, it will take time, but with support you know, not think, know that you can beat this addiction. If you don’t believe in yourself, there is no way that you can beat the addiction. In the next post of Overcoming Addiction, we will discuss motivation and the various solutions to finding motivation.
