Mood swings alone are not a sign of bipolar disorder. Mood swings are common emotional responses that are often brought about by stress or lack of sleep. Mood swings can be as mild as irritability or extreme reactions due to emotional sensitivity. Generally mood swings are nothing to worry about unless you experience them on a regular basis, have them one week in a row and the reactions are powerful enough to be harmful.
Bipolar disorder can become a social and emotional problem that can be treated through counseling and medication. If you think you are experiencing elongated periods of extreme irritability, please contact a family member or counselor for evaluation. Bipolar disorder, especially when volatile, can become a dangerous disorder.
