Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that many children and adults suffer from that inhibits their ability to focus on tasks, remember daily routines, and listen without interrupting. A combination of counseling and the use of medication may benefit people diagnosed with symptoms of ADHD to allow them to live a positive, productive life. Although there are many prescription drugs available on the market, not all of them have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to increased risks of harming other bodily functions. Some of these drugs have caused increased blood pressure, hallucinations, tics, forceful heart palpitations, and even death. The following drug products are FDA-approved and are used to treat ADHD symptoms:
Adderall. This drug works to restore the brain’s natural substances that are essential for paying attention, controlling behavior disorders, and maintaining focus for periods of time. The duo-combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine classifies this drug a stimulant. Stimulant medications are often habit-forming and can cause harmful reactions to your heart and/or blood pressure if used improperly.
Concerta. When used as part of a psychological, educational, and social treatment plan, Concerta can increase one’s ability to maintain focus while lengthening their attention span. Many people also report an improvement of listening skills and the ability to manage their workload. Prescription drug abuse may result in problems with the heart and blood pressure; hinder growth in children; and increase deviant thoughts.
Focalin. Similar to other drugs that treat ADHD symptoms, Focalin is primarily focused on people who have difficulty focusing, remaining composed, and managing actions. Because it is classified as a dexmethylphenidate, this drug is habit-forming, may lead to addiction, and can initiate depression with substance abuse.
Intuniv. This recently FDA-approved medication is targeted for children between the ages of 6 and 17 years old. Although it is not a stimulant, it has been shown to improve ADHD symptoms and may be refilled without a new prescription from your doctor every time it runs out. Unlike stimulant ADHD medications, Intuniv doesn’t have any risk factors associated with drug abuse or dependence.
Vyvanse. Approved in 2007, this stimulant is used in connection with therapeutic methods to lower the symptoms of ADHD. Informing your doctor of family history relating to heart and mental problems is important in determining if this is the right medication for you. Vyvanse was developed by New River Pharmaceuticals to combat the potential abuse and mistreatment of similar drugs.
