Prescription drug abuse has claimed another life in actor Corey Haim. Upon investigating his death, they discovered a disturbing lifestyle that had been brewing near the surface. Corey had become adept at doctor shopping, accumulating 553 drugs in his last year.
Doctor shopping is the act of a patient going to several different doctors for the same symptoms (often faked symptoms) in order to retrieve prescription drugs to fulfill an addiction. This process can be hard to monitor, and therefore hard to combat without the cooperation of the addict.
Corey died last month with symptoms of pneumonia, his death most likely caused by the combination of drugs with the illness. He had retrieved prescriptions from over twenty doctors, accumulating drugs such as the muscle relaxer Soma, the painkiller Norco, and Oxycontin. His untimely death should leave us with the message of avoiding prescription drugs for any reason other than medicinal purposes.
Corey’s unfortunate passing is one of many sad stories related to prescription drug addiction. If you’re suffering from a similar case, don’t hesitate to contact Solace Counseling so we can be there for you.
