Creating a balanced schedule

  • -

Addiction does anything but create a balanced lifestyle. When you are coping with an addiction, you focus solely on that addiction and little else. Creating a balanced schedule helps you shift your focus away from the addiction or disruptive behavior. The same is true if you are suffering from depression or any other behavioral disorder. There is a sense of chaos and unpredictability that compounds the stress of addiction and blocks the road to recovery. Finding balance is a big part of addiction recovery. This gives you a specific focus. A balanced schedule helps bring more balance to your life.

Diet and exercise are important and should be incorporated into a treatment plan, depending on the particular condition being treated. A balanced diet and moderate exercise can boost your mood. Have a specific time to do things each day. This includes getting up, having breakfast, exercising and other daily activities. Prioritize what means the most to you. Take time at the beginning of each day to figure out where you need to put your energies to make you feel secure and complete.

Stress and depression accompanying addiction often stem from taking on too many responsibilities. Set limits and prioritize. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep recharges your body and helps get you ready for a new day. Most adults need 6-7 hours of sustained sleep each night. Schedule time for yourself. While it is important to make time for work and family obligations, it is just as important to make time to relax and unwind. This can be 10 minutes when you get home from work or a half hour just before bed. This helps you to relax and center yourself. Make sure this relaxation is uninterrupted by letting others around you know not to bother you during this time unless it is important.

Appreciate what you have and what is around you. Negativity is everywhere, from the news and internet to co-workers and kids. It is easy to get caught up in all this negativity. Schedule time, even just five minutes, to think about the positive things in your life and put the negative things in proper perspective. Look for Solace Counseling on Facebook and Twitter.
