Depression and your sex drive

  • -

Previously, we have discussed depression and some of its common symptoms, but there are many more. Depression can affect nearly every aspect of your life…including your sex drive. Although this may not be at the top of your list of concerns when dealing with depression, it certainly is something you may want to consider discussing with your spouse or partner.

Although the exact cause of depression remains unknown, many researchers believe it is at least partly influenced by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This leads to feelings of hopelessness, fatigue and worthlessness, which can ultimately lead to loss of libido, inability to perform and a general lack of interest in sex.

To help keep your relationship on track, it is important for both partners to put forth a good effort to make it work. The partner who is not suffering from depression needs to understand that this side effect is a result of the illness and not a reflection on them. The depressed partner needs to realize and acknowledge that being the partner of a person with depression can be extremely difficult and hard to understand.

Additionally, many anti-depressant medications can interfere with sexual function. It is important not to let this deter you from seeking or maintaining treatment. Many options are available. Ask your doctor about other medications you can try.
