There are studies that have acknowledged the possibility that exposure to television can negatively affect the behavioral habits of children. From infancy to adolescence, (the developmental stages of the brain) the mind is extremely susceptible to its environment. Most traumas that cause lasting mental or psychological issues happen during these years. Television would not necessarily be considered trauma, but it can cause lasting effects on a child’s attention span and behavioral habits.
While there is television designed to assist and enhance the learning experience for a child, the primary issue with television is the constant change in visuals. There is rarely a consistent image on television. On a young mind, this can negatively affect a child’s brain development and attention span. Although it’s not an absolute that television can cause such problems, it is advised to limit television during infancy.
Throughout a child’s upbringing, it is very important to focus on interaction with people and the environment. This natural growth through exploration and communication can positively affect a child’s development, allowing for a more efficient academic mindset.
