Finding the Root of the Problem

  • -

The primary cause of an addiction can be hard to pinpoint, especially if the addiction began a long time ago, maybe even several years ago. However, knowing the catalyst of an addiction can make all the difference in reversing the process to get rid of the addiction. Often times addictions begin as a compensation for something else. Whether this compensation is legitimate or not, the addiction becomes the major concern once it has a hold of you. It is important to find the root of the problem in order to not only beat the addiction, but also to ensure the addiction will not come back or pose a problem again.

Look at the addiction as a tree. You continually search the branches for reasons, but you never find what you are looking for. Think of the leaves as excuses. There are basically thousands of excuses to give in to an addiction every day, but the root of the problem is what you need to worry about. Digging up the root is the only way to stop the problem. Trimming branches and leaves off can slow its growth down a little bit, but until you get down to the root, there really isn’t anything you can do to completely stop it.

In order to get rid of an addiction you have to attack it at its roots. The root of an addiction is what is helping it grow. The roots could be a person, a place, an action or even a thing that brings you back to the addiction. Getting down to the root and clearing out the tree of addiction from there is how you can overcome it. We focus too much on what we can see and what we can blame, but when it comes down to it, we have to look at ourselves and break down the tree from the inside out. Addiction can be a difficult thing to overcome, but it is possible. There are hidden solutions buried underground that we may not have tried yet. It’s just a matter of digging and never giving up.
