How do I get tested for adult ADHD?

  • -

It’s estimated that greater than 50 percent of children affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will continue to exhibit symptoms as adults. The diagnosis of ADHD in adults is a bit trickier than it is for children. It has been determined that ADHD is not onset in adulthood; therefore, it must also have been present in childhood, even if it went undiagnosed. For those diagnosed with ADHD as a child, a doctor can help provide you with a treatment plan better suited for your stage of life and your particular situation. For those who were not diagnosed during childhood, read on to find out more about how to get tested.

Do the research. If you are unsure about what ADHD is and what the specific symptoms are, it may be beneficial to do some research before seeking treatment. We offer many resources on our site as do many other physicians and treatment centers. Wherever you decide to look, be sure it is a reputable source.

Take Note. When you do see a physician regarding your symptoms, he or she will most likely want to know specifics. It will be very beneficial to keep track of these symptoms before you go in. Try writing down daily thoughts and behaviors in a journal or even on your computer and be sure to take them with you to your appointment. Additionally, your doctor may want to question you about your behavior as a child to determine whether some symptoms may already have been present.

See a specialist. The next step in seeking treatment is to make an appointment with a specialist in your area. Don’t be afraid to ask them about their experience in treating adults with ADHD. You want to find someone who has the expertise to treat you effectively and efficiently. Work with them to determine your treatment and make a plan.
