How to Handle Your ADHD at Work?

  • -

Each year millions of Americans struggle to maintain focus at work. ADHD and ADD are both behavioral disorders characterized by inattentiveness, over-activity, and/or impulsivity. If you are an adult who suffers from ADHD or ADD you should consult a physician who can properly diagnose and treat your condition. In the meantime, here are a few tips on how to cope with your ADHD at work.

  • Stay organized: While this is difficult for someone who suffers from ADHD/ADD, it is crucial to staying focused and managing ADD/ADHD at work. Getting organized will help you stay on top of things and manage responsibilities. Often people use planners, calendars on their phones, or a list system on their computers. While getting organized may be a pain at first, it will help you in the long run, and once you get used to staying organized you will appreciate it.
  • Write it down: This goes along with staying organized. One of the best ways to manage your ADD/ADHD is to make a list, which will prevent you from forgetting tasks, ideas, and to-dos. Make sure that you write tasks down all in the same place so that you do not misplace your lists. A list will help you manage your meetings, tasks, deadlines, and announcements.
  • Take a break: If you hit a wall, make sure you take a break. Taking a break will help you release some of that nervous energy and focus later on. If you can, you may want to walk around your floor or outside of the office. Clean air is always good for your body and helps you refocus your energy.
  • Avoid distractions: If you can, try to avoid distractions. Do not go online if you know you will become distracted. Make sure that your working environment is conducive to your needs and that it is sheltered from any loud noises, machines, foot traffic, and other distractions.

Of course, the best thing you can do to cope with your ADHD is to seek treatment and stick to your treatment plan. For more information, contact Solace Counseling.
