Learn about treatments
There is no single cure for addiction, whether it's drug and alcohol abuse, food addiction or a gambling addiction, to name just a few of the things on which people become dependent. Consider what your needs are -- can you commit to an in-patient rehab center, or is out-patient a better option for your job and family? Not everyone needs in-patient care or detox to get on the road to recovery. Many other treatment options can help with addiction, such as regular counseling and attending recovery group meetings through a church or local mental health center.
Get support
It is important not to try to deal with the problem alone. Reaching out to your support system is essential, although it may be scary to admit to your loved ones that you have a serious problem. Most of the time, your family and friends are aware of the problem and want you to get better.
Build a network of friends who do not engage in the addictive activity you are struggling with, whether it is drugs, alcohol, gambling or another problem. If you do not have a stable living environment or a sound support system, a sober-living home may be the best option. They give people a safe place to recover with plenty of emotional support. If you join a recovery group like Alcoholics Anonymous, make attendance a priority. You will get to know people who are going through the exact same issues you are, and you can lean on each other for support.
