Men and Eating Disorders

  • -

In the past, we have talked a lot about eating disorders among women, primarily because women have historically been the ones who suffer from them the most. However, in recent years, more and more men are suffering from various forms of eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.

Eating disorders show up a little differently in men than in women. For example, most women with eating disorders have an extreme fear of being fat and are primarily focused on being skinny. This can be true in men, but oftentimes men are more concerned about being muscular and having low body fat, not simply just being super skinny. Because of this. men often turn to substance abuse (like steroids) to help them attain their goals. Men are also more likely to over exercise than to starve themselves, purge or abuse laxatives.

Additionally the causes of eating disorders in men may vary from that of women. Many men take extreme measures with their dieting and exercising to excel in sports. For example, wrestlers and gymnasts are often required to maintain a certain weight. Additionally, men may want to improve their appearance for their job and end up going too far. Men in the military are often held to a very high standard in regards to their physical appearance.

Treatment for men with eating disorders may include some of the same options as that of women: psychotherapy, hospitalization, and meeting with a nutritionist or dietician. However, many men are unaware that they actually have an eating disorder, while others see seeking treatment as a weakness.

If you suspect a man in your life is suffering with an eating disorder, it is important to seek help. Eating disorders can have serious effects on the health and well being of those who suffer from them. In addition, oftentimes eating disorders coincide with depression and anxiety, which also need to be treated. For more information, contact Solace Counseling.

Nearly eight million people in the United States deal with eating disorders and nearly one million of those are men. However, the number of men who suffer from eating disorders may be slightly underestimated because of the common belief that this illness is more common in women.

Men are more commonly overweight and binge eaters, but they often go undiagnosed because society accepts overweight men more than overweight women. However, certain men are more inclined to be skinny and look fit.

Athletic males, including jockeys, wrestlers, and runners, are at an increased risk of developing an eating disorder. Men are competitive and will do anything to win. But men can also be affected by relationship problems, family problems, abuse, etc.

There is a lack of treatment centers and therapy groups that cater to men suffering from eating disorders. When people think of eating disorders and treatments, they stereotype and assume that only women who need treatment. Sometimes when a male seeks treatment for eating disorders he must sit in on eating disorder treatment sessions that are primarily female. This can lead to feelings of seclusion and being alone.
