Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) affects an estimated six to nine million Americans today. OCD is characterized as a condition that causes people to repeat certain tasks multiple times in an effort to ward off unwanted, repeated thoughts. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following symptoms, there is help available that can stop OCD from controlling your life.
Repeated, unwanted thoughts: People with OCD have thoughts, ideas, or impulses that cycle through their minds and won’t subside unless tasks are performed to satisfy the thoughts or ideas. These thoughts often cause anxiety and get in the way of normal behaviors or actions. Thoughts can include fear of imperfection, fear of harm to oneself or a loved one, or fear of becoming dirty or infected.
Repeated actions to ward off unwanted thoughts: Individuals suffering from OCD generally repeat behaviors or actions in an effort to stop unwanted thoughts from recurring. For example, someone with OCD might have fear of germs or sickness that causes excessive hand washing to combat the feeling of uncleanliness or infection. Other compulsions include repeatedly checking that something has been done, counting to a specific number while completing another compulsive action, maintaining organization, accumulating items and never getting rid of them, or praying constantly.
Significant time is dedicated to unwanted thoughts and repeated actions: OCD can take over a person’s life, and people suffering from it generally dedicate a significant amount of time (over an hour a day) to dealing with cycling thoughts and compulsions. OCD can affect one’s relationships, ability to work or go to school, and ability to function normally in society.
Sense of shame or guilt about obsessive or compulsive behaviors: Many people with OCD do not seek treatment for their disorder because they are ashamed or guilty about their behaviors and what others will think about them. Embarrassment often keeps them from telling even their closest friends or loved ones.
