Over-the-Counter Drug Abuse

  • -

The convenience and availability of over-the-counter drugs is intended to help people treat minor illnesses without having to obtain a prescription from their family doctor. The drugs are easily accessible and provide relief when natural remedies aren’t enough. Commonly abused medications include those intended to treat cold and flu symptoms. However, these drugs that teenagers routinely abuse can have traumatic effects on brain development and growth.

Warning signs to look out for include sudden changes in behavior, decrease in daily performance, increase suspicious behaviors, and recent weight fluctuation. Many people who engage in drug abuse start experimenting in hopes of relaxing and often won’t confess they have a problem. This can impair brain functionality and cognitive abilities as long as the abuse persists. It can lead to addiction, depression, and behavioral disorders. People who suffer from drug addiction have usually built up a tolerance and consume larger doses than recommended.

Potential side effects from drug abuse and drug addiction include a loss of control for a healthy and balanced life; destruction of brain tissues; and symptoms of withdrawal. Going for extended periods of time without consuming the drug can result in harmful withdrawal effects. Common withdrawal symptoms are anxiety, depression, shaking, sweating, nausea, and difficulty sleeping.

When someone is ready to admit they have a problem, they are searching for the courage and strength to be able to face the situation and accept help. Many treatment plans are available to help people including, rehabilitation centers, therapy, and programs centered on self-help. No matter the type of addiction, support from close friends and loved ones are essential to increase your recovery process.
