There is a negative effect on the quality of life for those abusing prescription drugs. However, for pregnant women in this situation the concern is for the mother as well as the unborn child. It has been determined that around five percent of pregnant women have used illicit drugs at some time during their pregnancy. And the sad fact is this estimate is considered to be on the low end. The affects on the mother and unborn child include a higher risk for pre-eclampsia, low birth weight, delivery complications, not enough weight gain by the mother, postpartum depression, maternal suicide and a host of issues after the infant’s birth.
While it can be tricky treating a pregnant woman for prescription drug abuse, it can be done. Another factor that complicates the issue is the fact that many women who abuse prescription drugs are also suffering from psychiatric disorders. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the safety of various treatment options. There are drugs that can be used in the process of withdrawal to include methadone. However there is concern over the use of methadone alongside antidepressants.
During pregnancy the goal is to do what is best to protect both mother and child. Abusing prescription drugs while pregnant is never a good option and making an attempt to kick the habit while pregnant will bring about a better outcome rather than continuing with drug abuse throughout pregnancy. The outcome for patients in this situation depends on the amount of therapy needed to meet the needs of drug withdrawal.
