Self Abusers: Compulsive Skin Picking

  • -

Compulsive skin picking is repetitively picking one’s skin to cause damage, and it is classified as an impulse control disorder. Compulsive skin picking is a form of self-mutation and is also known as Dermatillomania, Neurotic Excoriation or chronic skin picking.

Individuals who suffer from compulsive skin picking pick at skin variations such as cuts, freckles, moles, sores and acne blemishes. They use their fingernails, teeth and any picking device available. Compulsive skin picking can lead to bleeding, bruises, infections, scarring and permanent damage to the skin.

People who suffer from compulsive skin picking describe their feelings as an itch or an urge to dig at their skin. Compulsive skin picking is done to relieve tension, anxiety, stress and paranoia. After picking their skin there is a feeling of satisfaction and relief. Compulsive skin picking is done both consciously and unconsciously. The most common places for skin picking include the face, lips, back, shoulders, arms, stomach and chest.
