Our children are our future and need to be protected. The two main sources where children get prescription drugs are from their parents medicine cabinets and the internet. Here is some advice for talking to your children about prescription drugs.
1. For preschoolers-Tell your children that medicines can not only make you better but can also harm them. Tell them not to put ANYTHING in their mouths unless hey what it is.
2. For Ages 5-8 Years- Tell your children that medications are not the only way to make you feel better. State the importance of diet and exercise. Tell them to never takes medications from anyone unless it is from them, or doctors.
3. For Ages 9-11 Year Olds- Learn about the effects of prescription medications and discuss and share information. Instruct them how to say no if they are ever asked to try drugs. Establish consequences.
4. For Ages 12-14 Year Olds- Graphically describe side effects of taking prescription drugs. Reinforce that taking Rx medications the wrong way can result in illness and or death.
5. For 15-17 Year Olds- Research the legal ramifications of trading or selling prescription drugs. Inventory all the Rx medications in the home. Keep close tabs of your children's internet usage.
