Recovering from an addiction can seem like an insurmountable challenge, but it need not be. Many people succeed in improving their lives by leaving addictions behind and you can too.
Counseling can be a great help on the road to recovery, whether an individual is healing from drug abuse, alcohol abuse, smoking, an eating disorder or any other addictive issue.
Here are some suggestions to help you focus and get started on your addiction-free, self-empowered life.
• Be kind to yourself. Consider the fact that it took time to develop the addiction and it will take time to stop the addiction. Even when people quit cold turkey, there is a recovery period.
• Get plenty of sleep. Sleep is more rejuvenating and calming than caffeine or tobacco or any other substance.
• Engage in a recreational activity that you enjoy.
• Do not vegetate in front of the TV. This semi-hypnotized state is fertile ground for the subconscious to nag you about how much you "need" a cigarette, alcohol, food or other addictive substance.
• Join organizations or social groups that are actively involved in doing something you love. Maybe this activity is a writer's organization, a sewing circle, a crafting group or a car rebuilding group. Make sure that the focus of the group is on the activity, not an excuse to get together to eat, smoke and/or drink!
• Investigate your spiritual nature. Find a group or organization that honors an exploration of and reverence for life.
• Life has a lot to offer you and you have a lot to offer life. Become involved in a volunteer activity and give!
