A to-do list should help you feel organized so that you can achieve all the errands, projects, etc. you need to get done. But what happens when that helpful little to-do list multiplies and, before you know it, you have a to-do novel? What in the world?
At times, our to-do list can feel never ending, and the list that was supposed to make you feel organized suddenly becomes a glaring reminder of the goals you have not accomplished. Well, before you spin away in a fury of stress, consider these tips on handling your never-ending to-do list.
Take a deep breath
First, slow down! Take a deep breath and realize that not marking every item off your to-do list does not equate failure. Be realistic about what you can accomplish in one day. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by overloading your schedule. Break down your to-do list by importance, putting the most essential items first, which leads into our next tip.
Prioritize
What needs to be done right away and what can wait until next week? Prioritize your to-do list. This will help you feel more organized and less frantic about all the things you need to accomplish.
Be patient
Don’t let your to-do list control you—you are in control of your time. Getting the world’s most productive person award is not worth the stress and anxiety. Take each item one at a time, and don’t be tempted to jump onto the next thing because it may be less time consuming.
Reward yourself
After you achieve something on your to-do list, reward yourself. Take a break: have a snack, watch a TV show, do a crossword puzzle, whatever makes you feel rewarded because you deserve it!
By slowing down, prioritizing your to-do list, being patient, and rewarding yourself when you accomplish something, your to-do list can become your friend again, instead of the monster that won’t quit haunting your dreams.
