Many people associate the word addiction with drugs. While that is primarily the thing that can cause the most damage when addiction is involved, it is not the only addiction that can bring about serious problems. For example, the biggest addiction in the United States today is eating. A lack of time combined with the fact that it is relatively inexpensive, fast food restaurants have turned us into an obese nation with an addiction for unhealthy foods. This addiction has negatively affected many lives, giving a large amount of Americans serious health concerns. While it is not an addiction in the traditional sense, as with a drug addiction, such a problem can turn into a severe problem.
Video games and television have both become sloth addictions. Both have encouraged millions of Americans to stay inside on a regular basis. TV, a far more expansive addiction beyond video games as far as spanning across generations, has caused with the help of food addictions significant problems with our obesity epidemic in America. In comparison to drugs, these types of addictions are not quite as often monitored or reviewed.
The greatest problem with these addictions is that they are not illegal and therefore cannot be enforced. Fast food and television are not illegal, nor should they be, but they are responsible for far too many poor and unhealthy habits that they shouldn’t be ignored. There are a few campaigns out there about exercising regularly, but it should also be known the dangers of eating fast food constantly.
Drug addiction can have a far more instant and powerful impact on one’s life than television or food, but all can be debilitating when they go unchecked, ignored or denied. It is important to monitor various parts of your life for unhealthy addictions that may be keeping you from being healthy both mentally and physically.
