
If you suffer from anxiety, you are not alone. About 40 million adults in this country suffer from anxiety disorders. Most adults experience some mild anxiety as a part of their everyday lives. However, if your situation with anxiety is overwhelming, you may need to seek counseling.
If you decide to get counseling, you and your therapist will come up with a treatment plan that best suits your needs. This plan may include counseling and medication. Counseling for anxiety disorders often includes cognitive behavior therapy. In this type of treatment, the therapist helps clients recognize their negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs used to treat anxiety. Some of these medications include Xanax, Valium and Ativan.
In addition to therapy and medication, you can try other things to help relieve your anxiety. You can go out and socialize more. This gives you less time alone to dwell on your problems. Joining a support group could also help you to manage your anxiety. Also, try to avoid worrying about past problems. If you can change the situation to relieve your anxiety, then do what you can to change it. If you cannot do anything about the problem, make an effort to forget about it. Try to focus on positive things and pleasant thoughts. This leaves less time for thoughts that cause you to become anxious. You can also try keeping a journal. Writing down your thoughts may help to release some of your anxiety.
Another way to help relieve anxiety is to reduce your stress. Studies show that prolonged stress contributes to anxiety. Therefore, taking steps to reduce your stress will also reduce your anxiety. Here are three ways you can reduce stress:
1) Exercise: Walking, riding a bicycle and other aerobic exercises are good ways to relieve tension and reduce stress.
2) Relaxation: Yoga and meditation are also good ways to let go of tension to reduce stress.
3) Laughter: Watch a funny movie or TV show. Laughing increases the endorphins the brain releases and helps decrease stress levels.
