What is Post-traumatic Stress Disorder?

  • -

Have you witnessed or been part of a traumatic event? You could be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, an anxiety disorder that stems from a traumatic event.

Some people involved in a stressful or traumatic event suffer from periods in which they have difficulty coping with the real world. Symptoms can last for years if not treated and can really interfere with someone’s life. What are the symptoms of post-traumatic disorder?

  • Experiencing disturbing flashbacks of the traumatic event
  • Having dreams/nightmares about the traumatic event
  • Avoiding talking about the traumatic event
  • Being emotionally numb
  • Having memory problems
  • Experiencing trouble concentrating
  • Experiencing trouble sleeping
  • Being easily startled or frightened
  • Hearing or seeing things
  • Being irritable and angry

After a traumatic event, it is normal to be on a rollercoaster of feelings and emotions. People who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder often describe feelings of fear, sadness, and anxiety, not being able to concentrate, changes in sleeping patterns and/or eating habits, and experiencing crying spells and nightmares.

Stress from a traumatic event turns into post-traumatic stress disorder if you have suffered from these symptoms for more than a month. If your symptoms are severe, or if you are having difficulty returning to the normal activities in your daily life, you should consult a health care professional.
