What is an addiction?

  • -

An addiction is a mental or physical dependency on any substance, feeling, emotion and thought. People do not become addicted to a substance without first using it. Some substances are more addictive than others. Moreover, some people become addicted to certain things easier than other people. The reasons for this are mostly genetic makeup and environmental influence.

The most common types of addiction include sex addiction, drug addiction, alcoholism, eating disorders and gambling addiction. However, these are not the only types of addictions. In fact, it is possible to be addicted to almost anything.

Because there is no defining line between severe and moderate addiction, it may be hard to determine if an addict should admit himself to an outpatient addiction treatment facility. However, many addicts in every stage of addiction have a difficult time overcoming their condition without professional help.

Because rehab centers take patients out of their element, they are effective for helping them overcome their addiction. However, there is never any guarantee that a patient will completely overcome their condition. Results vary among individuals and are largely determined by the patient's desire to be rehabilitated.

Some patients overcome their addiction with counseling and behavioral treatments. Counselors can help patients by discovering the root cause of their addiction, as well as any mental blocks the patient may have.
